Sex differences in early carotid atherosclerosis (from the community-based Gutenberg-Heart Study).
2010
The objectives of this study were to describe gender differences in intima-media thickness (IMT) in a community-based population study and to define normal IMT values for healthy men and women. In total, 4,814 participants (aged 35 to 74 years; 2,433 men, 2,381 women) from the Gutenberg-Heart Study (GHS) were included. IMT was measured at both common carotid arteries using an edge detection system. Median IMT was 0.62 mm (25th percentile 0.55, 75th percentile 0.70) in women and 0.65 mm (25th percentile 0.57, 75th percentile 0.75) in men and was significantly associated with age (p0.0001). On multivariate analysis, advanced age, smoking, and arterial hypertension were positively associated w…
Caritas e bene comune
2014
Chromosomes and the origins of apes and australopithecins
1996
Comparison of molecular data suggests that the higher apes (Gorilla, Pan) and humankind (Homo) are closely related and that they diverged from the common ancestor through two speciation events situated very closely together in time. Examination of the chromosomal formulas of the living species reveals a paradox in the distribution of mutated chromosomes which can only be resolved by a model of trichotomic diversification. This new model of divergence from the common ancestor is characterized by the transition from (1) a monotypic phase to (2) a polytypic phase of three sub-species — pre-gorilla, pre-chimpanzee and preaustralopithecine. The quadruped ancestors ofAustralopithecus appear to ha…

Capitini. Educazione, religione, nonviolenza
2016
2016
This contribution presents Aldo Capitini (1899-1968), a representative and original figure of the Italian culture of the twentieth century. In the anthology of his unpublished writings, his pedagogy appears as a paideitic philosophy founded on the principle of the coexistence of everyone, which has the task of indicating to each subject their responsibility towards the other and the common good. The coexistence, the openness, the addition, the transmutation, the value, the teacher-prophet, the open school, the reform of the University: these are some of the Capitinian themes that catch the reader's attention on the extraordinary relevance of a pedagogy that promotes the encounter between ed…
On the construction of classes of suffix trees for square matrices: Algorithms and applications
1995
Given an n × n TEXT matrix with entries defined over an ordered alphabet σ, we introduce 4n−1 classes of index data structures for TEXT. Those indices are informally the two-dimensional analog of the suffix tree of a string [15], allowing on-line searches and statistics to be performed on TEXT. We provide one simple algorithm that efficiently builds any chosen index in those classes in O(n2 log n) worst case time using O(n2) space. The algorithm can be modified to require optimal O(n2) expected time for bounded σ.
Pattern Matching and Pattern Discovery Algorithms for Protein Topologies
2001
We describe algorithms for pattern-matching and pattern-learning in TOPS diagrams (formal descriptions of protein topologies). These problems can be reduced to checking for subgraph isomorphism and finding maximal common subgraphs in a restricted class of ordered graphs. We have developed a subgraph isomorphism algorithm for ordered graphs, which performs well on the given set of data. The maximal common subgraph problem then is solved by repeated subgraph extension and checking for isomorphisms. Despite its apparent inefficiency, this approach yields an algorithm with time complexity proportional to the number of graphs in the input set and is still practical on the given set of data. As a…
QUASI QUIDAM ORNATUS VITAE. Il decorum nel de officiis di Cicerone
2013
The theory of decorum in Cicero’s de officiis (44 BC) seems to suggest to the Romans not simply the fourth virtue of a general system of conduct, but a super-virtue able to act as a “shock absorber” in the exercise of social and political life, summarized in a principle that Cicero defines as verecundiae partes, that is non offendere homines. Thus, while Romans citizens suffer the most radical crisis of their history, he indicates the decorum as the backbone of the complex architecture that constitutes the common good. In this paper I argue that Cicero’s contribution to the political and theoretical discussion on justice and respect may bring a very helpful tool for rethinking critically th…
