LTE is rapidly gaining momentum for building future 4G cellular systems, and real operational networks are under deployment worldwide. To achieve high throughput performance, in addition to an advanced physical layer design LTE exploits a combination of sophisticated mechanisms at the radio resource management layer. Clearly, this makes difficult to develop analytical tools to accurately assess and optimise the user perceived throughput under realistic channel assumptions. Using Talking Books to Support Early Reading Development

This chapter explores the question of how interactive multimedia talking books can promote young children’s literacy development. Whilst commercially available talking books can motivate young children to read, there is little evidence that they are linked to the development of skills known to promote reading itself. The ‘Bangers and Mash’ talking books (Chera, 2000), were designed to address this issue, and we review studies that evaluated their effectiveness as classroom resources that could promote reading-related skills and abilities. Automated Railway Signs Detection. Preliminary Results

Abstract Nowadays safety in railways is mostly achieved by automated system technologies such as ERTMS/ETCS. Nevertheless, on local railways (suburban and regional lines) several tasks still depend on the choices and actions of a human crew. With the aim to improve safety in such type of railways, this research proposes a system for the automatic detection and recognition of railway signs by means of the digital image processing technique. First field applications, carried out on the Italian railway network, show that the proposed system is very accurate (the percentage of correctly detected railway signs is about 97%), even at high train speeds.

Televisión Española (TVE) has made possible the dissemination of medical topics in the 2016 season through four specialized health programs: Saber vivir, Centro médico, Esto es vida and El ojo clínico. In order to better understand their reception by spectators, this study analyzes, on the one hand, the data from the audiometry and, on the other hand, the results of a survey launched through social networks. The effect of writing modality on recollection in children and adolescents

We set out to assess the extent to which writing modality affects recollection in children and adolescents. We examined 10- to 11-year-old children’s (N = 63) and 16-year-old adolescents’ (N = 43) handwriting, keyboarding with a laptop computer and keyboarding with a touchscreen tablet computer or mobile phone in a within-subjects experimental design. Participants were instructed to write down stories dictated to them in the three writing modalities. Recollection of the stories was assessed using free recall of details in the stories. Locating the nodes of outdoor wireless sensor networks (WSNs) using (tri)lateration with a low-cost ranging technique, such as the received signal strength indicator (RSSI), often results in inaccurate location estimates.
