Building community spaces: Processes and actions In the City of Mercato Ballarò in Palermo
2022
The rediscovery of the cultural value of a project, the creation of new imagery in marginal places and the new aesthetics of temporality are some of the emerging issues in the city of crisis which are measured through processes of active involvement in community relations. There are many cities that have recognised urban markets as an integral part of local economies, with great benefits also at cultural and social levels. The hypothesis of triggering regenerative processes in the urban and social fabric in the unstable urban market context is the foundation of this research-action contribution developed through active relationships with public entities, associations and citizens. In order to return to inhabit inner areas, new infrastructures and basic services are needed, but also new perspectives and projects able to radically change production, consum…
Towards Positive Energy Districts: Energy Renovation of a Mediterranean District and Activation of Energy Flexibility
2023
The paper presents the analysis of energy retrofitting, integration of renewable energy and activation of energy flexibility in a cluster of buildings in the surroundings of a port on the Mediterranean Sea in Southern Italy, with the aim of checking the potential for it to achieve the status of positive energy district (PED). The objective of this study is to improve the contemporaneity between local energy generation and energy demand and reduce CO2eq emissions by considering signals that reflect the environmental variability of the electricity grid, through flexibility solutions applied to the HVAC system. The proposed scenarios are based on the dynamic simulation of the district and anal…

WHEN RIGHTS EMBRACE RESPONSIBILITIES. BIOCULTURAL RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES
ANTHROPOCENE: NEW ENCOUNTERS, OLD PATTERNS. A FEW COMMENTS ON PAYMENTS FOR ECOSYSTEM SERVICES
2021
This paper focuses on one of the answers that have been given to the question: what type of change is to be pursued to limit human impact on the Earth while considering the needs of poor and disadvantaged communities? In particular it looks at a proposal that combines sustainable development approaches with market mechanisms and top- down technocratic responses: Payments for Ecosystem Services frameworks. They have been criticized by many points of view and this paper questions, in particular, their very reliance on the market, questioning their appropriateness for the regulation of conser- vation activities and their interaction with local communities.

Tra bisogni individuali e fruizione collettiva. Spazi delle biblioteche e pratiche di lettura in una prospettiva diacronica
2021
Over the centuries, libraries have profoundly transformed their spaces, their physical appearance, their organization, but they have always remained faithful to their dual mission: a) to support lifelong learning and individual creativity, and b) to foster community development, that is, the growth of all social groups and age groups. The evolution of libraries has seen a steady acceleration especially since the mid-19th century, when the industrial processes of book production definitely expanded the availability and accessibility of content for a largest audience. The improved socio-economic conditions were best suited to the birth and development of public libraries, acting as democratic…
