Of Oaks, Erratic Boulders, and Milkmaids

2004

In the study and care for rural landscapes and their inhabitants a perpetual dilemma is knowing the different discourses those landscapes embody for a culture group, or “discourse community,” as Siri Aasbo (1999: 148) calls it (after Eco 1977). It is a well-known truism that a gap exists in the understanding and evaluation of landscapes between insiders and outsiders, natives and visitors, actors and observers, inhabitants and experts. Since this is known territory, I shall not revisit it, except to restate the obvious — expert opinion, even when well-intended, rarely agrees with the local inhabitants in what is good for them. As Sverker Sorlin expresses it, landscape is a “contested terrai…

High salinity wastewater treatment by membrane bioreactors

2020

Abstract This chapter reviews the state of the art regarding the use of membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems for saline wastewater treatment. In particular, a comprehensive review is presented discussing the most adopted MBR configurations for the treatment of saline wastewater. Further, the chapter discusses the main effects of salinity on the biological performance, kinetic parameters, fouling development, sludge rheological features, and greenhouse gas (GHG) production. Literature results show that there is a significant effect of the salinity (and/or salinity variations) on the biological performance and membrane filtration. Specifically, it was found that a gradual salinity increase, carr…

Salinity and Bacterial Diversity: To What Extent Does the Concentration of Salt Affect the Bacterial Community in a Saline Soil?

2014

In this study, the evaluation of soil characteristics was coupled with a pyrosequencing analysis of the V2-V3 16S rRNA gene region in order to investigate the bacterial community structure and diversity in the A horizon of a natural saline soil located in Sicily (Italy). The main aim of the research was to assess the organisation and diversity of microbial taxa using a spatial scale that revealed physical and chemical heterogeneity of the habitat under investigation. The results provided information on the type of distribution of different bacterial groups as a function of spatial gradients of soil salinity and pH. The analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA showed differences in bacterial compositi…

Small-Scale Sport Events and Local Community Perceptions

2020

With issues related to overtourism and, more specifically, tourismphobia, the impacts of any tourism-related activities are being scrutinised. Events falling under this category are therefore being scrutinised. Community events having been hailed to contribute to bridge the gap between locals and visitors, this chapter is going to look at small scale events and, more specifically, community sport event in Winchester (UK). Research carried by Seraphin et al. provided evidence that locals are overall very supportive of events going on in the city. That said, the research did not look at types of events, but events overall. This chapter is therefore going to provide a close up on a specific ty…

La reputazione delle istituzioni formative. Una questione di cura e di coerenza

2020

What is the reputation of the school and university in our society? What social credibility do they have? At first glance, it seems necessary to answer that the two main educational institutions do not enjoy a good reputation and this for a series of reasons, two of which have particular pedagogical importance: the typical mistrust of our time towards any form of institutionalization and devaluation care work. Certainly here we can see the signs of the moral fragility of our time, linked to the questioning of all forms of authority. Although it is therefore common today to talk about the importance of educational corresponsibility between school and family, there are numerous gestures that …

Diversity and composition of the microbiome associated with eggs of the Southern green stinkbug, Nezara viridula (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae).

2022

Although microbial communities of insects from larval to adult stage have been increasingly investigated in recent years, little is still known about the diversity and composition of egg-associated microbiomes. In this study, we used high-throughput amplicon sequencing and quantitative PCR to get a better understanding of the microbiome of insect eggs and how they are established using the Southern green stinkbug Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) as a study object. First, to determine the bacterial community composition, egg masses from two natural populations in Belgium and Italy were examined. Subsequently, microbial community establishment was assessed by studying stinkbug e…

Data Analysis as a Tool for Optimizing Learning Management Systems

2009

The advent of the Internet has opened a scope for research in new methods and tools that may facilitate the teaching and learning processes. This has, in turn, led to the development of learning platforms to support teaching and learning activities. The market penetration of these has been such that nowadays most universities provide their academic community with some form of a learning management system (LMS).Although a lot of effort has been put into deploying these platforms, the usage statistics that they generally provide are not generally processed to optimize their use within a specific context or institution (or confronted with quality or innovation indexes to produce useful feedbac…

Taxonomic and nomenclatural novelties concerning the Valencian flora (eastern Spain), II: As a part of the taxonomical and nomenclatural update of vascular flora of the Valencian Community, ten new combinations and…

Gmina żydowska w Praszce w II Rzeczypospolitej. Przyczynek do dziejów

2020

One from 7 Jewish religious commune in the Wieluń district during the Second Polish Republic was located in Praszka. It gathered about 1,000-1,500 followers of Judaism. The kehilla’s work was managed by the municipality’s management with the help of many employees, dealing with work in, among others, a synagogue, a commune building, a ritual bathhouse and a ritual slaughterhouse and religious schools. The rabbi was gifted with the great authority of the inhabitants of Praszka. At that time, the financial crisis prevailed, but the Jewish commune in Praszka maintained charitable and social activities on a large scale, through the maintenance and financing of many institutions, incl uding Jewi…

Gmina wyznaniowa żydowska w Wieluniu w II Rzeczypospolitej w dokumentacji Archiwum Państwowego w Łodzi

2019
