Demographic determinants of creativity: the analysis of the development of creative potential and forecast for the Baltic states

2017

AbstractHuman capital, affected by the demographic determinants, nowadays becomes a novel driver of change and regional development. Changes in the modern economy determine the future leading role of human capital, especially its creative dimension in the development of modern, sustainable competitive advantages of countries and regions. Considering the negative demographical tendencies in the Baltic States, the aim of this paper is to analyse and forecast the development of creative potential in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Our methodology is based on the estimation of a regression model describing the relations between Global Creativity Index (GCI) and its components with the available …

Building composite indicators in tourism studies: Measurements and applications in tourism destination competitiveness

2017

Abstract Composite indicators are useful tools to synthesize and monitor multidimensional phenomena. The aim of this paper is twofold: to offer the methodological foundations to build composite indicators in tourism and to evaluate a set of currently available composite indicators. Tourism destination competitiveness indicators constitute the object of this contribution. Their definitions, concepts and measures are analyzed and their evaluation is performed through the application of an original protocol. The results highlight that several methodological issues still surround the measurement of destinations competitiveness indicators. This paper provides tourism scholars and practitioners w…

NATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS - SCENARIOS FOR ROMANIA

2012

Competitiveness remains a continuous concern of nations in any stage of development, from factor based economy to innovation based economy. The present paper aims to emphasize the current level of national competitiveness of Romania, on one hand, and to identify possible ways to improve the current level by building scenarios in order to eliminate the uncertainty, on the other hand. The paper proposes four scenarios for increase GCI (growth competitiveness index) and four scenarios from pessimistic point of view (in these scenarios GCI will be decrease). In the near future, Romania must improve their pillars of national competitiveness and must increase their GDP per capita for transition p…

Koncepcja zarządzania opartego na wiedzy jako podstawa rozwoju kompetencji przedsiębiorstwa

2017

Przedsiębiorstwa stale poszukują sposobów budowania i utrzymywania trwałej, długofalowej przewagi konkurencyjnej.

THE IMPORTANCE OF REGIONALIZATION IN IMPROVING THE PROCESS OF

2015

The interest to study the impact of regionalization on the absorption of EU funds is a major and timely subject, since on the one hand Member States should reform their institutional architecture and management tools to enable efficient cooperation with European structures, and on the other hand there is huge opportunity for economic and social development funded from European resources whose effective access can only be made based on an appropriate organizational framework. The regionalization process in Romania has experienced delays entailing a disadvantage in terms of the progress in the national socio-economic development. In the present study we aimed to identify the main weaknesses i…

Intraguild interactions between two egg parasitoids of a true bug in semi-field and field conditions.

2014

International audience; Research on interspecific competitive interactions among insect parasitoids has often been characterized by laboratory studies in which host insects are exposed to female parasitoids of different species in various sequences and combinations. In the last years, an increasing number of studies have investigated interspecific interactions under field and semi-field conditions although just a few number of works focused on egg parasitoids. In this work, we undertook a two-year study to investigate interspecific interactions between Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) and Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), two egg para…

Seat Competitiveness and Redistricting: Evidence from Voting on Municipal Mergers

2013

We analyze how (anticipated) changes in the competitiveness of the seats of municipal councilors affect their voting behavior over municipal mergers. The competitiveness of the seats changes because the merger changes the composition of political competitors and the number of available seats in the next election. We use this variation for identification and find that the smaller the increase in the competitiveness of a councilor's seat, the more likely he is to vote for the merger. These effects are not related to the behavioral responses of the voters, but arise from the councilors’ desire to avoid electoral competition.

Optical biosensor-based characterization of anti-double-stranded DNA monoclonal antibodies as possible new standards for laboratory tests.

2009

The serum determination of circulating anti-double-stranded (ds)DNA autoantibodies is a routine measure for the laboratory diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus. Since available assays differ substantially and no feasible calibrator is available, the aim of this study was to evaluate a recently introduced surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor chip for binding studies between dsDNA and anti-dsDNA autoantibodies and to demonstrate its usefulness for the characterization of new monoclonal antibody (mAb) standards and standardization of assays. We characterized two human and one murine monoclonal anti-dsDNA antibodies by measuring the kinetic on- and off-rates using the biosensor and ca…

Benzodiazepines: specific competitors for the binding of L-tryptophan to human serum albumin.

1975

By means of the gel filtration technique, the effect of nine benzo-diazepine derivates on the binding of l-tryptophan to human serum albumin was investigated. Using equimolar tryptophan and benzodiazepine concentrations, all benzodiazepines with binding constants higher than 104 (M−1), displace l-tryptophan from its binding site to a high degree. The mechanism of the displacement was characterized as a competition for a common binding site. Some of the benzodiazepines displace l-tryptophan to a greater extent than salicylic acid. The benzodiazepines and tryptophan are the only substances known with a high degree of stereospecific binding to human serum albumin. This study shows that there i…

Identification of α2-adrenoceptors and non-adrenergic idazoxan binding sites in rabbit colon epithelial cells

1990

alpha 2-Adrenoceptors are possibly involved in the regulation of the hydroelectrolytic flux across the digestive mucosa. As no data are available concerning the existence of these receptors in colon epithelial cells, we aimed to investigate the existence of alpha 2-adrenoceptors in this tissue using tritiated antagonists. [3H]Yohimbine and [3H]rauwolscine were not usable to label colonic alpha 2-adrenoceptors because of their very high level of non-specific binding. In contrast, the methoxy derivative of idazoxan, [3H]RX821002, appeared a convenient radioligand for the purpose. [3H]RX821002 bound with high affinity (KD = 6.2 +/- 0.8 nM) to a single population of non-interacting sites (Bmax …
