Mesolithic pit-sites in Champagne (France): First data, key issues

2015

International audience; In less than a decade, more than 30 sites and around 200 deep pits dated to the Mesolithic have been identied in the Champagne-Ardenne region (north-eastern France). This paper describes the main characteristics of these features and provides some clues for their interpretation. This unexpected but apparently common type of site clearly implies a more marked territoriality and a greater social complexity than generally proposed for the period in continental northern France.

Jauni ieskati kvantu automātu stāvokļu skaita efektivitātē

2022

On the semantic interpretation of complex causatives in Finnish: An experimental morphology approach

2009

It is well documented that in some languages, such as in Finnish, it is possible to stack derivational morphemes iteratively to word stems. However, such complex words are seldom used in real communication, and it is unclear whether they are interpreted compositionally in tandem with their morphological structure. Here I studied the matter by eliciting semantic interpretations from ten native speakers of Finnish for words whose complexity and morphemic content were systematically varied. The results show that although the frequency of semantic interpretation decreases linearly as a function of the number of morphemes in a word (contrary to the case of ungrammatical words where the semantic …

Recipes of success : the case of pulp and paper industry 1989-2015

2017

Explaining the variation in competitive positioning actions across firms in the face of environmental change has long inspired debates in the field of strategic management. Despite the importance of these questions, little effort has been done to examine the complex interdependencies among industry, organizational attributes, and strategic actions that potentially underlie the organizational performance in one model without controlling one or more of the three factors. Most of the studies on competitive dynamics primarily have focused on independently exploring the effects of organizational characteristics or the industry structure on competitive actions and reactions, which, in turn, impac…

Strategies for Exploring Functions from Dynamic Combinatorial Libraries

2020

Dynamic combinatorial chemistry (DCC) is a powerful approach for creating complex chemical systems, giving access to the studies of complexity and exploration of functionality in synthetic systems. However, compared with more advanced living systems, the man‐made chemical systems are still less functional, due to their limited complexity and insufficient kinetic control. Here we start by introducing strategies to enrich the complexity of dynamic combinatorial libraries (DCLs) for exploiting unexpected functions by increasing the species of building blocks and/or templates used. Then, we discuss how dynamic isomerization of photo‐switchable molecules help DCLs increase and alter the systemic…

Information Dynamics of Electric Field Intensity before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

2022

This work investigates the temporal statistical structure of time series of electric field (EF) intensity recorded with the aim of exploring the dynamical patterns associated with periods with different human activity in urban areas. The analyzed time series were obtained from a sensor of the EMF RATEL monitoring system installed in the campus area of the University of Novi Sad, Serbia. The sensor performs wideband cumulative EF intensity monitoring of all active commercial EF sources, thus including those linked to human utilization of wireless communication systems. Monitoring was performed continuously during the years 2019 and 2020, allowing us to investigate the effects on the patterns…

Innowacyjne podejście do kształcenia przyszłych nauczycieli

2015

W artykule ukazano wyniki praktycznej realizacji opracowanego systemu w p…

A Neuro-Ethological Approach for the TSP: Changing Metaphors in Connectionist Models.

1994

Biological systems often offer solutions to difficult problems which are not only original but also efficient. Connectionist models have been inspired by neural systems and successfully applied to the formulation of algorithms for solving complex problems such as the travelling salesman problem. In this paper we extend the connectionist metaphor to include an ethological account of how problems similar to the travelling salesman problem are solved by real living systems. A model is presented in which a population of neural networks with simple sensory-motor systems evolve genetically in simulated environments which represent the problem instances to be solved. Preliminary results are discu…

Feasibility of Ultra-Short-Term Analysis of Heart Rate and Systolic Arterial Pressure Variability at Rest and during Stress via Time-Domain and Entro…

2022

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Blood Pressure Variability (BPV) are widely employed tools for characterizing the complex behavior of cardiovascular dynamics. Usually, HRV and BPV analyses are carried out through short-term (ST) measurements, which exploit ~five-minute-long recordings. Recent research efforts are focused on reducing the time series length, assessing whether and to what extent Ultra-Short-Term (UST) analysis is capable of extracting information about cardiovascular variability from very short recordings. In this work, we compare ST and UST measures computed on electrocardiographic R-R intervals and systolic arterial pressure time series obtained at rest and during both post…
