On the Complexity of Solving Subtraction Games

We study algorithms for solving Subtraction games, which sometimes are referred to as one-heap Nim games. We describe a quantum algorithm which is applicable to any game on DAG, and show that its query compexity for solving an arbitrary Subtraction game of $n$ stones is $O(n^{3/2}\log n)$. The best known deterministic algorithms for solving such games are based on the dynamic programming approach. We show that this approach is asymptotically optimal and that classical query complexity for solving a Subtraction game is generally $\Theta(n^2)$. This paper perhaps is the first explicit "quantum" contribution to algorithmic game theory.

Nash codes for noisy channels

This paper studies the stability of communication protocols that deal with transmission errors. We consider a coordination game between an informed sender and an uninformed decision maker, the receiver, who communicate over a noisy channel. The sender's strategy, called a code, maps states of nature to signals. The receiver's best response is to decode the received channel output as the state with highest expected receiver payoff. Given this decoding, an equilibrium or "Nash code" results if the sender encodes every state as prescribed. We show two theorems that give sufficient conditions for Nash codes. Probabilistic and team PFIN-type learning: General properties

We consider the probability hierarchy for Popperian FINite learning and study the general properties of this hierarchy. We prove that the probability hierarchy is decidable, i.e. there exists an algorithm that receives p_1 and p_2 and answers whether PFIN-type learning with the probability of success p_1 is equivalent to PFIN-type learning with the probability of success p_2. To prove our result, we analyze the topological structure of the probability hierarchy. We prove that it is well-ordered in descending ordering and order-equivalent to ordinal epsilon_0. The longest common prefix array is a very advantageous data structure that, combined with the suffix array and the Burrows-Wheeler transform, allows to efficiently compute some combinatorial properties of a string useful in several applications, especially in biological contexts. The SHApe Recovery from Partial textured 3D scans challenge, SHARP 2020, is the first edition of a challenge fostering and benchmarking methods for recovering complete textured 3D scans from raw incomplete data. Some complexity and approximation results for coupled-tasks scheduling problem according to topology

International audience; We consider the makespan minimization coupled-tasks problem in presence of compatibility constraints with a specified topology. In particular, we focus on stretched coupled-tasks, i.e. coupled-tasks having the same sub-tasks execution time and idle time duration. We study several problems in framework of classic complexity and approximation for which the compatibility graph is bipartite (star, chain,. . .). In such a context, we design some efficient polynomial-time approximation algorithms for an intractable scheduling problem according to some parameters.

Right-jumps and pattern avoiding permutations

We study the iteration of the process "a particle jumps to the right" in permutations. We prove that the set of permutations obtained in this model after a given number of iterations from the identity is a class of pattern avoiding permutations. We characterize the elements of the basis of this class and we enumerate these "forbidden minimal patterns" by giving their bivariate exponential generating function: we achieve this via a catalytic variable, the number of left-to-right maxima. We show that this generating function is a D-finite function satisfying a nice differential equation of order~2. Properties of a Class of Toeplitz Words

We study the properties of the uncountable set of Stewart words. These are Toeplitz words specified by infinite sequences of Toeplitz patterns of the form $\alpha\beta\gamma$, where $\alpha,\beta,\gamma$ is any permutation of the symbols 0,1,?. We determine the critical exponent of the Stewart words, prove that they avoid the pattern $xxyyxx$, find all factors that are palindromes, and determine their subword complexity. An interesting aspect of our work is that we use automata-theoretic methods and a decision procedure for automata to carry out the proofs.

A popular way to define or characterize graph classes is via forbidden subgraphs or forbidden minors. These characterizations play a key role in graph theory, but they rarely lead to efficient algorithms to recognize these classes. In contrast, many essential graph classes can be recognized efficiently thanks to characterizations of the following form: there must exist an ordering of the vertices such that some ordered pattern does not appear, where a pattern is basically an ordered subgraph.
