Study on the transient characteristic in the human visual system using masking experiments

In this paper the visual masking effect is interpreted on the basic of the transient characteristic in two dimensional neuronal networks. The study investigates the suitability of the effect for use as a measurement method. It is shown that the stimulus distribution in space can be scanned at different points in time and that various dynamic characteristic values of the system can be measured.

Constraining the Equation of State of Neutron Stars with Genral Relativity

When a radio pulsar breakes down by virtue of magnetodipole emission, its gravitational mass decreases accordingly. If the pulsar in hosted in a binary system, this mass loss will increase the orbital period of the system. We show that this relativistic effect can be indeed observable if the NS is fast and magnetized enough and that, if observed, it will help to put tight constraints on the equation of state of ultradense matter.

Propagation pattern analysis during atrial fibrillation based on the adaptive group LASSO.

The present study introduces sparse modeling for the estimation of propagation patterns in intracardiac atrial fibrillation (AF) signals. The estimation is based on the partial directed coherence (PDC) function, derived from fitting a multivariate autoregressive model to the observed signals. A sparse optimization method is proposed for estimation of the model parameters, namely, the adaptive group least absolute selection and shrinkage operator (aLASSO). In simulations aLASSO was found superior to the commonly used least-squares (LS) estimation with respect to estimation performance. Anisotropic muon Knight shift in the HCP single crystals of Cd, Zn and Be

In single crystal samples of Zn, Cd and Be (hcp structure) stroboscopicμSR measurements successfully revealed anisotropies in the muon Knight shift (Kμ). An anisotropic Kμ can provide information on the amount of non s-electrons screening the charge of the muon implanted in these metals as a light hydrogen isotope. In Cd, the anisotropic part depends strongly on the temperature and shows a change in sign at roughly 110 K. In Zn, the anisotropic part below 10 K turns out to comprise 4th order contributions in the direction cosines of the external field. This can be understood on the basis of an anisotropicg-factor of the conduction electrons or spin-orbit coupling, respectively.

Crack detection using electrostatic measurements

In this paper we extend recent work on the detection of inclusions using electrostatic measurements to the problem of crack detection in a two-dimensional object. As in the inclusion case our method is based on a factorization of the difference between two Neumann-Dirichlet operators. The factorization possible in the case of cracks is much simpler than that for inclusions and the analysis is greatly simplified. However, the directional information carried by the crack makes the practical implementation of our algorithm more computationally demanding.

Domain-wall induced large magnetoresistance effects at zero applied field in ballistic nanocontacts

2013

We determine magnetoresistance effects in stable and clean Permalloy nanocontacts of variable cross section, fabricated by UHV deposition and in situ electromigration. To ascertain the magnetoresistance (MR) effects originating from a magnetic domain wall, we measure the resistance values with and without such a wall at zero applied field. In the ballistic transport regime, the MR ratio reaches up to 50% and exhibits a previously unobserved sign change. Our results can be reproduced by recent atomistic calculations for different atomic configurations of the nanocontact, highlighting the importance of the detailed atomic arrangement for the MR effect.
