FE modeling of Partially Steel-Jacketed (PSJ) RC columns using CDP model

This paper deepens the finite element modeling (FEM) method to reproduce the compressive behavior of partially steel-jacketed (PSJ) RC columns by means of the Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) Model available in ABAQUS software. Although the efficiency of the CDP model is widely proven for reinforced concrete columns at low confining pressure, when the confinement level becomes high the standard plasticity parameters may not be suitable to obtain reliable results. The recent large use of nonlinear seismic assessment techniques requires the definition of highly reliable computational models. The retrofitting or strengthening of RC columns by steel angles and battens is a commonly adopted technique, used to improve strength and deformation capacity of existing RC buildings. In the case of steel angles not directly loaded, the numerical definition of the cross-section model has to be handled carefully since it is affected by more uncertainties. PBO textile embedded in FRCM for confinement of r.c. columns

Results of experimental tests on two reinforced concrete columns confined with PBO-FRCM jacketing subject to axial load and bending moments are presented, showing the effectiveness of the confinement system. La mancanza di un pensiero coerente sulla trasformazione dei luoghi ha contribuito, negli ultimi anni, a compromettere la qualità del paesaggio urbano siciliano, privando la campagna di una necessaria elaborazione estetica. Per questo sembra molto interessante riflettere non solo sul rapporto uomo-paesaggio, ma soprattutto sull’importanza del prendersi cura dei luoghi contemporanei. Il progetto di architettura consente di trovare la misura della costruzione, sulla valorizzazione dell’abitare.

Do we understand the solid-like elastic properties of confined liquids?

Recently, in polymeric liquids, unexpected solid-like shear elasticity has been discovered, which gave rise to a controversial discussion about its origin (1⇓–3). The observed solid-like shear modulus G depends strongly on the distance L between the plates of the rheometer according to a power law G ∝ L − p with a nonuniversal exponent ranging between p = 2 and p = 3 . Quantum confinement effects observed by the photoluminescence of SiOx/SiO2 multilayers

Spectral and decay features related to the red emission from Si nanocrystals were investigated by time-resolved photoluminescence spectra carried out on SiOx/SiO2 nanosized multilayers. On decreasing the SiOx thickness from 8.4 nm to 2.2 nm this luminescence band exhibits a blue-shift from 1.65 eV to 1.75 eV and its lifetime increases from 12μs to 17 μs. These results are discussed on the basis of previous models proposed in literature and agree with quantum confinement effects arising from differently sized Si nanocrystals in our samples.
