Simvastatin in vitiligo: an update with recent review of the literature.

2021

Patients with vitiligo often seek medical attention, as it diminishes their quality of life resulting in significant morbidity. Several topical and systemic therapies are in vogue targeting the immunological aspect of this disease, but results are often unsatisfactory, and complete cure remains elusive. Recently, simvastatin, a 3-hydroxy-3-methylyglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor, is being evaluated for vitiligo management because of its multimodal action, easy availability, and low cost. The proposed multimodal actions range from anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, to immunomodulatory properties which may be of therapeutic benefit in vitiligo patients. The authors intend to eva…

Uncoupling Protein 2 as genetic risk factor for systemic lupus erythematosus: association with malondialdehyde levels and intima media thickness

2020

BACKGROUND Increased oxidative stress potentially leads to accelerated atherosclerosis and, consequently, cardiovascular diseases, the main cause of death in systemic lupus erythematous (SLE). To gain insight into these mechanisms, we studied the association of uncoupling protein (UCP) 2 genetic variants, gene involved in the mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species, and oxidative stress with SLE and the presence of atherosclerosis. METHODS Genetic analysis of the UCP2 -866G/A and UCP2 Ins/Del polymorphisms was performed in 45 SLE patients and 36 healthy controls by RFLP-PCR. Oxidation status was determined by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Presence of subclinical athero…

Uncommon presentation of pigmented paraungual basal cell carcinoma on the first toe treated with total excision

2020

Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are the most common types of skin neoplasm. The finger, toe, and nail unit are uncommon and rare locations of BCC. Only a few patients with foot BCC have been reported, and ungual BCC is even less frequent. We present a patient with a BCC on the left first toe. Clinically, it appeared as a brown-colored plaque with an irregular border on the nail fold and dorsum of the left thumb. Histopathological findings were consistent with the pigmented type of BCC. Surgical approach with subsequent full thickness mesh graft led to a complete remission. Follow-up at 10 months revealed a functionally and cosmetically acceptable outcome. The clinical presentation of nail unit…

Cerebriform sebaceous nevus: a subtype of organoid nevus due to specific postzygotic FGFR2 mutations.

2021

Background Postzygotic mutations in FGFR2 have been identified in mosaic forms of acne, keratinocytic epidermal nevi, nevoid acanthosis nigricans / rounded and velvety epidermal nevus and in two fetuses with papillomatous pedunculated sebaceous nevus (PPSN). Objectives To determine the clinical and genetic characteristics of children with cerebriform, papillomatous, and pedunculated variants of sebaceous nevi. Methods Infants diagnosed with sebaceous nevi characterized by a cerebriform, papillomatous, and/or pedunculated morphology over a 10-year period (2010 - 2019) at three pediatric dermatology centers in Switzerland and France were included in this case series. Clinical and histological…

Two-Step Digital Follow-up of Patients at High Risk for Melanoma: a Retrospective Analysis of 152 Patients

2021

Auditory evoked potentials to changes in speech sound duration in anesthetized mice

2018

AbstractElectrophysiological response termed mismatch negativity (MMN) indexes auditory change detection in humans. An analogous response, called the mismatch response (MMR), is also elicited in animals. Mismatch response has been widely utilized in investigations of change detection in human speech sounds in rats and guinea pigs, but not in mice. Since e.g. transgenic mouse models provide important advantages for further studies, we studied processing of speech sounds in anesthetized mice. Auditory evoked potentials were recorded from the dura above the auditory cortex to changes in duration of a human speech sound /a/. In oddball stimulus condition, the MMR was elicited at 53-259 ms laten…

AB0427 Clinical and laboratory findings in patients with late-onset sle and correlations with il6 concentrations

2013

Background Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune rheumatic disease that usually develops in women aged 18-50 years. It is known that age at onset modifies the clinical manifestations of SLE, and so the elderly may form a specific patient subgroup. It is now well established that the serum levels of the cytokines interleukin (IL) 6 and IL10 are increased in patients with SLE (1). Objectives The primary aim was to compare the type of clinical involvement and autoantibodies in patients with late-onset (LO) or early-onset (EO) SLE. The second aim was to compare IL6 levels in the two patient groups and their possible correlations with clinical and immunological manifestations. Meth…

P172 Mainzer lupus score (MLS) a new questionnaire for lupus treatment

2020

Background For the diagnosis and treatment of the systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), numerous scores and indices already exist with different focal points, which are mostly extensive and time consuming. The MLS is a short newly developed questionnaire consisting out of four items to consider whether it is necessary to adjust current therapy: Occurrence of new lupus-specific symptoms, subjective measurement of quality of life (Qol), change of serological abnormalities and the occurrence of organ damage accrual. Methods Patients who had at least 3 visits since 2016 in our clinic were able to participate. Spearman-correlation was used to correlate MLS and several other well established scores…

Haemolytic-uraemic syndrome during severe lupus nephritis: efficacy of plasma exchange

2012

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been described as a cause of thrombotic microangiopathy, especially thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS) is less frequent in SLE. We report a case of such an association during an episode of severe lupus nephritis in a young woman, who was successfully treated with steroids, cyclophosphamide and especially plasma exchange with plasma replacement. This report highlights the importance of recognising atypical HUS in SLE patients by looking for schistocytes in case of haemolytic anemia with a negative antiglobulin test, in order to begin plasma exchange.

Radiology for Postmortem

2019

Thanatology deals with the study of early and postmortem changes in relation to the estimation of the time since death. These normal postmortem changes depend on internal and external factors, such as body temperature, preexisting conditions, underlying disease or injury, and the postmortem interval.
