Electrochemical pH Control at Gold Nanowires

2018

In this work, interdigitated arrays of nanowire electrodes are used with one array acting as the working electrode while the other is used to generate the required protons. Finite element simulations of the pH control electrodes were performed to provide insight on the generation and subsequent diffusion of protons. This informed the inter-tine spacing of the electrodes used.. This electrochemical pH control method was then used to enable the detection of analytes of interest.

Ultraviolet Filters in Cosmetics

2018

Abstract UV filters are used in sunscreen cosmetics to protect skin from the sunlight. Nowadays, they are also incorporated into other daily-use cosmetics. However, many concerns about their safety have been raised, because they can be absorbed through the skin, further metabolized and eventually bioaccumulated and/or excreted. These percutaneous absorption processes may result in various adverse health effects (i.e., allergic contact dermatitis) and other more serious systemic effects, such as carcinogenic and oestrogenic activity. For this reason, UV filters as well as their maximum allowed concentrations have been regulated by the legislations in force. In this sense, analytical control …

Assessing behavioural problems and assets in children and adolescents

1990

Abstract The main purpose of this brief report is to introduce a wide range battery of instruments for the psychological assessment of children and adolescents, which was developed in Spain and coordinated by the last author. The battery includes a General Diagnostic Report (anamnesis and general way of life), two Behaviour Problem Scales (one for school and one for non-school settings), a Hyperactivity Scale, the ‘Battery of Socialization’, the I-6 (Junior) Questionnaire, the EPQ-J, a Questionnaire for the Assessment of Self-Concept, the Antisocial Behaviour Scale, a Locus of Control Scale, an Irrational Beliefs Inventory, an Assertiveness Scale, a Fear Inventory, an Anxiety Scale, a Depre…

Analgesic effect of intravenous ketamine in cancer patients on morphine therapy: A randomized, controlled, double-blind, crossover, double-dose study

2000

Pain not responsive to morphine is often problematic. Animal and clinical studies have suggested that N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists, such as ketamine, may be effective in improving opioid analgesia in difficult pain syndromes, such as neuropathic pain. A slow bolus of subhypnotic doses of ketamine (0.25 mg/kg or 0.50 mg/kg) was given to 10 cancer patients whose pain was unrelieved by morphine in a randomized, double-blind, crossover, double-dose study. Pain intensity on a 0 to 10 numerical scale; nausea and vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, and dry mouth, using a scale from 0 to 3 (not at all, slight, a lot, awful); Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) (0- 30); and arterial pressur…

Generalized power-angle control for grid-forming converters: A structural analysis

2022

Several control schemes have been recently proposed and studied as grid-forming controls for power converters. In all these schemes, the power-angle control loop is the part which defines the fundamental capabilities of the grid-forming control: that control loop governs in fact the inherent synchronization mechanism of the power converter, the power sharing with the other generation sources in the system and the oscillatory characteristics of the converter-based resource. This article introduces a general formulation for the power-angle control characterizing the grid-forming concept for power converters. The generalized power-angle control is based on a polynomial fraction formulation, an…

Counterdiabatic vortex pump in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

2017

Topological phase imprinting is a well-established technique for deterministic vortex creation in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates of alkali metal atoms. It was recently shown that counter-diabatic quantum control may accelerate vortex creation in comparison to the standard adiabatic protocol and suppress the atom loss due to nonadiabatic transitions. Here we apply this technique, assisted by an optical plug, for vortex pumping to theoretically show that sequential phase imprinting up to 20 cycles generates a vortex with a very large winding number. Our method significantly increases the fidelity of the pump for rapid pumping compared to the case without the counter-diabatic control, leadin…

The relationship between animal cruelty in children and adolescent and interpersonal violence: A systematic review

2019

Abstract The following study is a systematic review of the relationship between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence. The systematic literature review following PRISMA guidelines and combined with the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, enabled us to locate 32 studies published between 1995 and July 2017. Overall, the results show that episodes of animal cruelty during childhood and adolescence tend to co-occur alongside other forms of violent and antisocial behaviors. Cruelty to animals was associated with bullying, behavioral problems, experiences of abuse (emotional, physical and sexual), and juvenile delinquency. Furthermore, recurrent animal cruelty during childhood a…

Molecular bases of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder: shedding light on the darkness

2017

International audience; Eating-disorders (EDs) consequences to human health are devastating, involving social, mental, emotional, physical and life-threatening aspects, concluding on impairment and death in cases of extreme anorexia nervosa. It also implies that people suffering an ED need to find psychiatric and psychological help as soon as possible to achieve a fully physical and emotional recovery. Unfortunately, to date, there is a crucial lack of efficient clinical treatment to these disorders. In this review, we present an overview concerning the actual pharmacological and psychological treatments, the knowledge of cells, circuits, neuropeptides, neuromodulators and hormones in the h…
