Polymer composites containing natural fibers are receiving growing attention as possible alternatives for composites containing synthetic fibers. The use of biodegradable matrices obtained from renewable sources in replacement for synthetic ones is also increasing. However, only limited information is available about the creep behavior of the obtained composites. In construction stages of cable-stayed bridges with prestressed concrete deck, the influence of creep on stresses and strains is very important in order to foresee the final patterns of internal forces and displacements. In cantilever construction, the concrete deck can be considered, in each stage, as a continuous beam resting on elastic restraints, which modify with successive additions of new segments, until the last one has been assembled. A new rigid liquid crystalline polymer that demonstrates good mechanical and thermomechanical properties and acceptable processing temperature has been recently synthesized and characterized. The melting temperature and some thermomechanical properties do not seem, however, suitable for use in some applications at high temperature or in the presence of aggressive fluids. Abstract The effect of loading rate and strain on the creep behavior after sample yielding has been studied in previous communications (14–15) for Mylar in tension and for Lexan in compression. In this work the creep behavior of Lexan samples previously elongated is considered both in tension and in compression. A procedure which collects all the data independently of both loading rate and initial creep strain is proposed.

A new equipment to measure the combined effect of humidity, temperature, mechanical stress and UV exposure on the creep behaviour of polymers

To be able to study and predict the physical properties of a polymeric material under different environmental conditions is very important. Moisture, UV irradiation, thermal and mechanical stresses can dramatically change the characteristics of the material and hinder some specific applications. In this work, a new equipment able to perform creep tests under different environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, stress) is presented. Some preliminary results are also presented using a sample of polyamide 6. As this polymer is sensitive to all these variables, it is appropriate to verify the effectiveness of the new instrument.

New evidence for the form and extent of the Pernicana Fault System (Mt. Etna) from structural and soil–gas surveying

A multidisciplinary study based on structural and soil–gas surveys was carried out in order to investigate the relationship between soil CO2 degassing and the tectonic setting of the lower northeastern flank of Mt. Etna volcano. The results show that anomalous soil CO2 emissions occur mainly along faults trending WNW–ESE and also where these faults intersect the other main fault set (trending NE–SW) that displaces the study area. In particular, anomalies in CO2 degassing were revealed both along the Pernicana Fault and along another fault (Fiumefreddo Fault) which may represent the prolongation of the former towards the Ionian Sea coast.
