Objectives: To determine the anthropometric indices, lipopolysaccharide-binding proteins (LBP), and lipid profile in patients with metabolic endotoxemia. Methods: The study comprised of 47 patients with metabolic endotoxemia (the metabolic endotoxemia group) and 43 controls (the control group). Patients in the metabolic endotoxemia group were categorized further into three subgroups including the normal weight group (n=8), the overweight group (n=12) and the obese group (n=27). Height, weight, waist, and hip circumference were measured, and waist-hip ratio (WHR) and body mass index (BMI) were calculated. Extensions of the seminal Ghoussoub's min-max principle [15] to non-smooth functionals given by a locally Lipschitz continuous term plus a convex, proper, lower semi-continuous function are presented and discussed in this survey paper. The problem of weakening the PalaisSmale compactness condition is also treated. Some abstract consequences as well as applications to elliptic hemivariational or variational-hemivariational inequalities are then pointed out. ©Dynamic Publishers, Inc.

Progeny of “Sir Thaddeus” (1897), a less known essay by literary critic Cezary Jellenta [Napoleon Hirszband], presents an interesting attempt to discern and estimate novels of the 19th century Polish realists as originated from the great Mickiewicz’s poem. According to Jellenta, there are several social, national or aesthetic parallels existing between this famous epic work – a kind of architext and paradigm of Polish culture in general – and the well-known texts by Prus, Orzeszkowa, Sienkiewicz, Konopnicka or Witkiewicz, as well the unknown novel of Galician writer Alfred Nossig. The article titled Artists and Philistines, published in 1897 in the “Kurier Niedzielny”, a moderated weekly with a compromising orientation (publisher: Maria Chełmońska, editors: Ludomir Grendyszyński), is an example of a voice about artist-society relationship typical of the end of the century. In un articolo pubblicato da Domus nel 1998 John Thackara sosteneva che il destino del design sarebbe stato l’entropia, presentando possibili e stimolanti vie di fuga da tale dimensione. A 20 anni da questa affermazione e a 100 anni dal Bauhaus, si avverte la necessità di immaginare un’offerta formativa altrettanto visionaria e coraggiosa come quella di Weimar, in grado di assumere l’entropia descritta da Thackara in una nuova prospettiva.
