Abstract Purpose We investigated experiences of families who provide consent for research on behalf of a loved-one hospitalized in intensive care (ICU). Methods Multicentre, qualitative, descriptive study using semi-directive interviews in 3 ICUs. Eligible relatives were aged >18 years, and had provided informed consent for a clinical trial on behalf of a patient hospitalized in ICU. Interviews were conducted from 06/2018 to 06/2019 by a qualified sociologist, recorded and transcribed. Results Fifteen relatives were interviewed; average age 50.3 ± 15 years. Lessons from uncertainty on antifungal treatment in ICU

We read with great interest the Editorial from Moghnieh et al. on the EMPIRICUS trial and antifungal use in intensive care unit (ICU) (1). Authors described nicely the trial and some background evidence on untargeted antifungal treatment in non-neutropenic critically ill patients in ICU (2,3). However, we believe that some points may be further clarified. First, it may be useful to cite the study from Knitsch et al. among those evaluating empiric antifungal treatment in ICU (4). Knitsch et al. enrolled 252 critically ill patients with localized/generalized intra-abdominal infection either of community or of nosocomial origin requiring emergency surgery.

Hemorrhagic shock is the number one cause of death on the battlefield and in civilian trauma as well. Mathematical modeling has been applied in this context for decades; however, the formulation of a satisfactory model that is both practical and effective has yet to be achieved. This paper introduces an upgraded version of the 2007 Zenker model for hemorrhagic shock termed the ZenCur model that allows for a better description of the time course of relevant observations.
