Chemical Approach to Functional Artificial Opals

2007

Artificial opals are self-assembled colloidal crystals, which consist of a cubic dense packing (fcc) of hard (not film-forming) colloids with diameters ranging from 200 to 900 nm. Because of their periodic nanostructure the assemblies are able to reflect light that matches their periodicity, i.e., UV- to IR-radiation depending on the size of the colloids. Thus, they present a subgroup of 'photonic crystals'. While, originally, the chemistry inside the colloids and the resulting opals was of minor significance, nowadays the chemical variation of opals is becoming more and more important for the preparation of functional and patterned opals. The search for functional opals is, therefore, espe…

Orientation of Polymer Functionalized Nanorods in Thin Films

2010

A directed self assembly of anisotropic nanostructures offers a possibility to provide unique functional materials, which are e.g., important in optoelectronic devices. We use the liquid crystalline behavior of polymer functionalized TiO2 and ZnO nanorods to apply methods well known for low molecular liquid crystals to achieve oriented thin films. Convective forces in the meniscus on a structured substrate obtain thin layers of oriented nanoparticles with a ordering parameter of S = 0.7. As another method we present the orientation of polystyrene covered ZnO nanorods under an applied electric field. The method offers a perpendicular alignment of the rods to the surface.

Investigation of α-amino acid N-carboxyanhydrides by X-ray diffraction for controlled ring-opening polymerization

2019

Abstract The need for a scalable synthesis of not sequence defined polypeptides as biomaterials is met by the ring-opening polymerization of α-amino acid N-carboxyanhydrides (NCAs). Even though this polymerization technique appears straight forward, it holds pitfalls in terms of reproducibility and overall control over the polymerization conditions, which depends, beside choice of solvent or initiator, significantly on reagent purity. In addition, the synthesis of monomers can lead to the formation of racemic amino acids. Thus, in this work, we describe the benefits of highly pure monomers in order to control nucleophilic ring-opening polymerization NCAs. Hereby, monomer purity is investiga…

Synthesis and characterisation of tetrazole compounds: 3 series of new ligands representing versatile building blocks for iron(II) spin-crossover com…

2005

Abstract New tetrazole compounds were synthesized and characterised by NMR and FTIR spectroscopy as well as by single crystal X-ray diffraction. We present in this paper mono- and ditetrazoles, which represent a versatile class of building blocks for the formation of mononuclear iron(II) complexes with monotetrazoles as terminal ligands as well as iron(II) coordination polymers with ditetrazoles as bridging ligands. Especially, the series of α,ω-bis[tetrazol-1-yl]-alkanes open the field of fascinating supramolecular structures with spin transition properties.

On the phase transition in CsCN

1983

X-ray diffraction and dielectric measurements have been performed on the molecular crystal CsCN as a function of temperature. The order parameter of the cubic to rhombohedral phase transition (Tc=186 K) was determined and interpreted by a coupling of the (CN)− orientations to the shear strain. At lower temperatures the dielectric response is dominated by thermally activated relaxations processes rather than by electrical ordering of the CN dipoles.

Effect of the crystallization on the phase transitions IV ⇐ III and IV ⇐ II of ammonium nitrate

1993

Abstract The solid state phase transition path of ammonium nitrate is influenced by the manner of crystallization. Slow crystallization from water gives ideal crystals, which behaved differently from crystals prepared by rapid crystallization from the melt.

Freely-Suspended and Transferred Freely-Suspended Films of Polymeric Liquid Crystals

1993

Freely-suspended (FS) liquid-crystal (LC) films of a polymethylsiloxane homo- and a copolymer with different mesogenic side groups have been prepared and investigated. For both substances the preparation of the films succeeded only in the isotropic phase but the higher ordered phases were reached after cooling. The films of the homopolymer have only been obtained with thicknesses estimated to be in the pm-range and with an unusual “Book-Shelf” orientation of the smectic layers. In contrast, the films of the copolymer were thinner and showed a homeotropic orientation of the mesogens in the smectic A phase. Interestingly, this material exhibited a different layer spacing in film and bulk, alt…

Phase transitions and distortion of [BiCl6]3- octahedra in (C3H5NH3)3[BiCl 6] - DSC and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies

2004

The DSC diagram of tris(allylammonium) hexachlorobismuthate(III), (C3H5NH3)3[BiCl6], revealed three anomalies at 152, 191 and 299 K. The structure of the salt was determined at 200 and 315 K, below and above the high-temperature phase transition at 299 K. In both phases the crystals are monoclinic. At 200 K the space group is C2/c whereas at 315 K it is C2/m. The structures, at both temperatures, are composed of [BiCl6]3− octahedra and allylammonium cations. The organic and inorganic moieties are attracted to each other by a network of the N-H. . .Cl hydrogen bonds. The relationship between corresponding parameters of the unit cells has been found. The phase transition at 299 K, of the orde…
