Quick Recovery of Renal Alterations and Inflammatory Activation after a Marathon

2018

<b><i>Purpose:</i></b> We evaluated the incidence of acute kidney injury in a cohort of marathon participants. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> We conducted a prospective observational study focused on evaluating the incidence of kidney damage after a marathon, and its evolution in the first 48 h after the marathon in 88 runners who completed the Valencia Marathon. <b><i>Results:</i></b> From the 88 participants, 42 (48.28%) presented with acute kidney injury, mainly grade 1 (95.20%). Microscopic haematuria was observed in 29 runners (33%). Levels of interleukin 6, leukocytes, and neutrophils were markedly increased at the marath…

Glomerular Filtration Rate in Renal Damage

2015

Renal function is mainly represented by the glomerular filtration (GF), which is dependent on the number and function of the nephrons. Glomerular filtration declines progressively after the third decade with a progressive loss of 1 % per year. In addition to diseases producing direct damage in the glomerular structures, high blood pressure values, diabetes, and dyslipidemia are the main factors increasing the rate of GF decline over the years. Other functional parameters of the kidney such as renal plasma flow or tubular functions are not measured in daily practice in hypertension and are not related to risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Acute tissue damage induced by monopolar microelectrodes and radiofrequency in vocal cords after transoral cordectomy

2021

Abstract Introduction: In 2006 and 2009, we reported the levels of acute and chronic tissue damage after cordectomy associated with use of the microlectrodes using high frequency energy. In 2010, we shifted to radiofrequency rather than high frequency electrogenerators. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate acute tissue damage in the larynx after cordectomy using microelectrodes coupled to a radiofrequencygenerator. Methods: We studied 22 patients with a stage T1 glottic squamous cell carcinoma. The patients were randomly assigned to the two operating mode: cutting or coagulation (11 patients each mode). The strength of the study is that there are no previous studies on the effect…

Comparison of diode laser – Oral tissue interaction to different wavelengths. In vitro study of porcine periodontal pockets and oral mucosa

2020

[Background] The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of diode lasers at different wavelengths and power settings in handmade incisions in periodontal pockets and in oral mucosa of porcine tissue considering thermal damage, necrosis and the affected area of the soft tissue.

Tensile Failure of Bio-inspired Lattices with Different Base Topologies

2022

In the last decades the use of cellular materials, either in the form of foams or lattices, has widely spread in engineering due to their specific properties, namely their high mechanical and multifunctional properties in terms of strength, stiffness, energy absorption, thermal and acoustic insulation at small weight compared to bulk materials. These features can be achieved, in the case of lattices, by designing their structure at different scales, both in two and three dimensions. Additionally, nowadays, complex desired geometries may be easily obtained thanks to consolidated and even recent technologies of production, especially Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques. The aim of the pres…

Danno all'ambiente e tutela della persona

2012

Theories and Mechanisms of Aging

2013

The more one learns about single processes and genes known to be involved in aging, the more it becomes evident that these are connected and there is no unifying theory of aging. The individual theories put individual factors and processes in focus and for each theory there are direct links to life span or to age-related disorders. In the following chapter, the key theories of aging focusing on telomeres, DNA damage, oxidative stress as well as possible roles of nutrition, the interplay between genes and environment (epigenetics) and cellular protein homeostasis are presented. In animal models the life span can be altered by targeting specific genes, proteins and signalling pathways. After …

Photolysis of N-hydroxpyridinethiones: a new source of hydroxyl radicals for the direct damage of cell-free and cellular DNA.

1996

N-Hydroxypyridine-2-thione (2-HPT), known to release hydroxyl radicals on irradiation with visible light, and two related compounds, viz. N-hydroxypyridine-4-thione (4-HPT) and N-hydroxyacridine-9-thione (HAT), were tested for their potency to induce DNA damage in L1210 mouse leukemia cells and in isolated DNA from bacteriophage PM2. DNA single-strand breaks and modifications sensitive to various repair endonucleases (Fpg protein, endonuclease III, exonuclease III, T4 endonuclease V) were quantified. Illumination of cell-free DNA in the presence of 2-HPT and 4-HPT gave rise to damage profiles characteristic for hydroxyl radicals, i.e. single-strand breaks and the various endonuclease-sensit…

Unexpected DNA damage caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons under standard laboratory conditions

2007

Abstract The genotoxicity of 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was determined with the alkaline version of the comet assay employing V79 lung fibroblasts of the Chinese hamster as target cells. These cells lack the enzymes necessary to convert PAHs to DNA-binding metabolites. Surprisingly, 11 PAHs, i.e., benzo[ a ]pyrene (BaP), benz[ a ]anthracene, 7,12-dimethylbenz[ a ]anthracene, 3-methylcholanthrene, fluoranthene, anthanthrene, 11 H -benzo[ b ]fluorene, dibenz[ a,h ]anthracene, pyrene, benzo[ ghi ]perylene and benzo[ e ]pyrene caused DNA strand breaks even without external metabolic activation, while naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene and naphthacene were inactive. When the comet as…
