Molecular evidence for the inverse comorbidity between central nervous system disorders and cancers detected by transcriptomic meta-analyses.

There is epidemiological evidence that patients with certain Central Nervous System (CNS) disorders have a lower than expected probability of developing some types of Cancer. We tested here the hypothesis that this inverse comorbidity is driven by molecular processes common to CNS disorders and Cancers, and that are deregulated in opposite directions. We conducted transcriptomic meta-analyses of three CNS disorders (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Schizophrenia) and three Cancer types (Lung, Prostate, Colorectal) previously described with inverse comorbidities. Analyzing Regional Geographic Challenges: The Resilience of Chinese Vineyards to Land Degradation Using a Societal and Biophysical Approach

Land degradation, especially soil erosion, is a societal issue that affects vineyards worldwide, but there are no current investigations that inform specifically about soil erosion rates in Chinese vineyards. In this review, we analyze this problem and the need to avoid irreversible damage to soil and their use from a regional point of view. Information about soil erosion in vineyards has often failed to reach farmers, and we can affirm that to this time, soil erosion in Chinese vineyards has been more of a scientific hypothesis than an agronomic or environmental concern. High-resolution pyrolysis–gas chromatography with a movable reaction zone

Abstract A new device was constructed for pyrolysis–gas chromatography and it was laboratory tested. The device enables the thermal degradation of polymers inside a capillary pre-column and transfer of the reaction zone into a column oven. The pyrolysis procedure described protects the thermally sensitive compounds prior to pyrolysis, prevents the process of irreversible condensation of high-boiling pyrolysis products during the chromatographic process and eliminates extracolumn effects on the peak broadening.

BEHAVIOUR OF GRAPHITIZED CARBON BLACK IN THE EXTRACTION OF POLAR NON-IONIC NITROGEN-CONTAINING PESTICIDES. A CHECKING OF HYPOTHESES

Graphitized Carbon Black (GCB) extractive cartridges are evaluated for on-line coupling with a C8 analytical column to determine eleven carbamates and one carboximide pesticide from spiked deionized water at the 1.2 μg/L level. Several experiments were carried out to ascertain whether GCB saturation, pesticide degradation on the surface, existence of by-pass channels, mobility among the bulk cartridge, or strong retention on the surface interfere with the determination of pesticides. Transcriptome profiling of citrus fruit response to huanglongbing disease.

Huanglongbing (HLB) or "citrus greening" is the most destructive citrus disease worldwide. In this work, we studied host responses of citrus to infection with Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CaLas) using next-generation sequencing technologies. A deep mRNA profile was obtained from peel of healthy and HLB- affected fruit. It was followed by pathway and protein-protein network analysis and quantitative real time PCR analysis of highly regulated genes. Acidic cytosolic proteins are preferentially imported into rat liver lysosomes.

Previous studies have reported that lysosomes isolated from human diploid fibroblasts and from rat liver can selectively import and degrade specific proteins. We have now reinvestigated this selectivity using an in vitro assay with rat liver lysosomes and an extract of cytosolic proteins prepared from cultured cells labeled to equilibriums with [35S-]methionine. Analysis by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and autoradiography of the cytosolic proteins bound to the lysosomal membrane and imported into the lysosomes shows that when all cytosolic proteins are simultaneously present in the in vitro assay the lysosomal uptake also occurs in a specific manner. Sequencing and analysis of the gene encoding the α-toxin of Clostridium novyi proves its homology to toxins A and B of Clostridium difficile

A library of total Clostridium novyi DNA was established and screened for the alpha-toxin gene (tcn alpha) by hybridization with oligonucleotides derived from a partial N-terminal sequence and by using specific antisera. Overlapping subgenic tcn alpha fragments were isolated and subsequently the total sequence of tcn alpha was determined. The 6534 nucleotide open reading frame encodes a polypeptide of M(r) 250,166 and pI 5.9. The N-terminal alpha-toxin (Tcn alpha) sequence MLITREQLMKIASIP determined by Edman degradation confirmed the identity of the reading frame and the assignment of the translation start point. Preparation, characterization and hydrolytic degradation of PLA/PCL co-mingled nanofibrous mats prepared via dual-jet electrospinning

Abstract PLA/PCL co-mingled nanofibrous mats were prepared via multi-jet electrospinning. The concentration of PLA and PCL in the co-mingled mats were controlled by changing the flow rate of the two polymer solutions. The amount of PLA and PCL in the co-mingled nanofibrous mats was monitored by UV–Vis measurements through a colored dye added to PLA and by FTIR-ATR analysis. External effects of domestic regulations: comparing internal and international barriers to trade

Abstract In a world in which barriers to trade at all levels—international and internal—are mostly a by-product of the implementation by governments of different regulatory policies to deal with “domestic” or “local” problems such as environmental degradation, health, and labor standards, the article purports to show how the mechanisms that are set in motion by the operation of competition among the governments inhabiting the different jurisdictional tiers of federal countries lead to outcomes that are different from those generated by the ‘agreed-upon’ rules that govern the relations of national governments with each other in matters of international trade.

Although bacterial genomes have been traditionally viewed as being very compact, with relatively low amounts of repetitive and non-coding DNA, this view has dramatically changed in recent years.
