Thermoeconomic diagnosis of air conditioning systems: experimental assessment of performance for improved reliability
2018
Thermoeconomic diagnosis is an exergy-based fault detection and diagnosis technique which has been recently extended to air conditioning systems. So far, developments of this technique have relied only on simulation data without being evaluated using real data. For the first time, this work aims at assessing the performance of thermoeconomic diagnosis using experimental data obtained from a five-ton packaged rooftop air conditioning unit (RTU) installed at Herrick Laboratories, Purdue University. The RTU was tested in psychrometric chambers under a wide range of operating conditions and fault levels. The following faults were investigated: (i) evaporator fouling, (ii) condenser fouling and …
Pulmonary artery sarcoma mimicking chronic thromboembolic disease: computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings.
1994
The diagnosis of the rare primary malignant tumors of the pulmonary arteries is often delayed as symptoms are nonspecific.Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of three patients with occlusion of the right pulmonary artery, two with sarcoma and one with chronic thromboembolic disease were analyzed for discriminating diagnostic criteria.Criteria suggesting pulmonary artery sarcoma are inhomogeneous high or low attenuation (hemorrhage, necrosis), soft-tissue density in pulmonary arteries, vascular distension, enhancement after administration of gadopentetate dimeglumine. Criteria for chronic thromboembolic disease are homogeneous soft-tissue lesions, abrupt vascular na…
Abdominal splenosis and its differential diagnoses: What the radiologist needs to know
2021
Abstract Splenosis is a benign acquired condition characterized by the presence of heterotopic viable splenic tissue in other organs or within cavities such as peritoneum, retroperitoneum, or thorax after splenic trauma or surgery. Abdominal splenosis is often an incidental finding and computed tomography and magnetic resonance usually allow a confident diagnosis. The typical enhancement that parallels the spleen is a useful hallmark of splenosis. Splenic implants lack contrast uptake in the hepatobiliary phase and show high signal at high b-values on diffusion-weighted images. In some cases splenosis may mimic malignant and benign conditions in the peritoneum as well as in hollow and paren…
Uferzellangiom - eine seltene Differentialdiagnose von Milztumoren
2008
UNLABELLED HISTORY AND PRE-ADMISSION FINDINGS: Routine abdominal sonography of a 51-year-old man 6 years after removal of the right testis and radiotherapy for a seminoma revealed a 3 cm mass within the spleen. INVESTIGATIONS All biochemical tests were normal. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the tumour which had not been present on the CT before the seminoma had been treated. No other space-occupying lesions were found in the thorax and abdomen. TREATMENT AND COURSE A splenectomy was performed because a metachronous metastasis of the seminoma was suspected. The operation and subsequent course were uneventful. At operation the tumour had been diagnosed as an…
Volume scanning in the evaluation of fetal malformations: a new dimension in prenatal diagnosis
1995
Three-dimensional ultrasound examination was performed in 204 patients with a fetal malformation detected by conventional ultrasound. The patients were examined between 13 and 40 weeks of gestation. The ultrasound equipment used was a Combison 330 and a Combison 530 (Kretztechnik, Austria) with an abdominal Voluson sector transducer (3.5/5 MHz) (Kretztechnik, Austria). This ultrasound system can provide a high-quality three-dimensional surface or translucency image of fetal structures similar to that of a photograph or an X-ray image within seconds without an additional expensive work-station. Of the 204 patients examined with three-dimensional ultrasound, this technique proved advantageous…

Validity of multiplex biomarker model of 6 genes for the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules
2011
Abstract Background Currently the cytological examination of fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies is the standard technique for the pre-operative differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules. However, the results may be non-informative in ~20% of cases due to an inadequate sampling and the lack of highly specific, measurable cytological criteria, therefore ancillary biomarkers that could aid in these cases are clearly needed. The aim of our study was to evaluate the mRNA expression levels of 8 candidate marker genes as the diagnostic biomarkers for the discrimination of benign and malignant thyroid nodules and to find a combination of biomarkers with the highest diagnostic value. Materials an…
The role of ceus in the evaluation of thyroid cancer: from diagnosis to local staging
2021
Ultrasound often represents the first diagnostic step for thyroid nodule evaluation in clinical practice, but baseline US alone is not always effective enough to achieve thyroid nodule characterization. In the last decades new ultrasound techniques, such as CEUS, have been introduced to evaluate thyroid parenchyma as recommended by EFSUMB guidelines, for use in clinical research field, although its role is not yet clear. Several papers show the potential utility of CEUS in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid nodules and in the analysis of lymph node involvement in neoplastic pathology. Therefore, we carried out an evaluation of the literature concerning the role of CE…
Detection and identification Fabavirus species by one-step RT-PCR and multiplex RT-PCR
2014
The genus Fabavirus of the family Secoviridae comprises a group of poorly characterized viruses. To date, only five species have been described: Broad bean wilt virus 1 (BBWV-1), Broad bean wilt virus 2 (BBWV-2), Lamium mild mosaic virus (LMMV), Gentian mosaic virus (GeMV) and Cucurbit mild mosaic virus (CuMMV). The development is described of two RT-PCR procedures for the detection and identification of Fabavirus species: a one-step RT-PCR using a single pair of conserved primers for the detection of all fabaviruses, and a one-step multiplex RT-PCR using species-specific primers for the simultaneous detection and identification of the above-mentioned species of the genus Fabavirus. These m…
