Computerunterstützte Diagnostik in der Thoraxradiologie - aktuelle Schwerpunkte und Techniken

2003

The proliferation of digital data sets and the increasing amount of images, e. g. through the use of multislice spiral CT or multiple follow-up examinations in the context of new therapies, are ideal prerequisites for computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) in chest radiology. Multiple studies have described the applications and advantages of computer assistance in performing different diagnostic tasks. More powerful computers will enable the introduction of these systems into the clinical routine and could provide an enormous increase in morphological and functional information. The commercial introduction of tools for detection and visualization of pulmonary nodules has already begun. This is one …

Implementation of a gene panel for genetic diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia

2021

Abstract Introduction Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is characterized by an alteration in the ciliary structure causing difficulty in the clearance of respiratory secretions. Diagnosis is complex and based on a combination of techniques. The objective of this study was to design a gene panel including all known causative genes, and to corroborate their diagnostic utility in a cohort of Spanish patients. Methods This was a multicenter cross-sectional study of patients with a high suspicion of PCD according to European Respiratory Society criteria. We designed a gene panel for massive sequencing using SeqCap EZ capture technology that included 44 genes associated with PCD. Results We includ…

2001

Employing fuzzy logic in the diagnosis of a clinical case

2010

Fuzzy logic is a logical calculus which operates with many truth values (while classical logic works with the two values of true and false). Since fuzzy logic considers the truth of scientific statements like something softened, it is fruitfully applied to the study of biological phenomena, biology is indeed considered the field of complexity, uncertainty and vagueness. In this paper fuzzy logic is successfully applied to the clinical diagnosis of a patient who suffers from different diseases bound by a complex causal chain. In this work it is presented a mathematical foundation of fuzzy logic (with connectives and inference rules) and then the application of fuzzy reasoning to the study of…

Diagnosis of the neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses: An update

2006

Abstract For the majority of families affected by one of the neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs), a biochemical and/or genetic diagnosis can be achieved. In an individual case this information not only increases understanding of the condition but also may influence treatment choices and options. The presenting clinical features prompt initial investigation and also guide clinical care. The clinical labels “infantile NCL”, “late infantile NCL” and “juvenile NCL”, therefore remain useful in practice. In unusual or atypical cases ultra-structural analysis of white blood cells or other tissue samples enables planning and prioritisation of biochemical and genetic tests. This review describes cu…

Three-dimensional ultrasonography in prenatal diagnosis

1995

Within the past five years, 3D ultrasonography has developed to the degree that it offers both the patient and the examiner an entirely new visual experience in prenatal diagnosis. With the system described here (Kretz-technik, Austria), any desired plane can be displayed within the stored volume, and within seconds a high-quality 3D surface or transparent image can be calculated and displayed on the ultrasound monitor without need for an external workstation. All of this can be performed routinely in the clinical setting. Since 1989 we have routinely examined a total of 458 fetuses (242 normal and 216 with anomalies) between 16 and 38 weeks of gestation, supplementing our conventional 2D u…

Role of biomarkers in monitoring antiblastic cardiotoxicity

2016

Early detection of anticancer drug-induced cardiotoxicity (CTX) has been evaluated by most international scientific cardiology and oncology societies. High expectations have been placed on the use of specific biomarkers. In recent years, conventional biomarkers and molecules of more recent interest have been tested and compared in the context of anticancer drug-related CTX. Encouraging results were obtained from studies on molecules of myocardial damage, such as troponin and markers of myocardial wall stress, including circulating natriuretic peptides, as well as from the assessment of the products of inflammation or circulating levels of free radicals. However, clear guidelines on their se…

Lifestyle and impact on cardiovascular risk factor control in coronary patients across 27 countries: Results from the European Society of Cardiology …

2019

Aims The aim of this study was to determine whether the Joint European Societies guidelines on secondary cardiovascular prevention are followed in everyday practice. Design A cross-sectional ESC-EORP survey (EUROASPIRE V) at 131 centres in 81 regions in 27 countries. Methods Patients (<80 years old) with verified coronary artery events or interventions were interviewed and examined ≥6 months later. Results A total of 8261 patients (females 26%) were interviewed. Nineteen per cent smoked and 55% of them were persistent smokers, 38% were obese (body mass index ≥30 kg/m2), 59% were centrally obese (waist circumference: men ≥102 cm; women ≥88 cm) while 66% were physically active <30 min 5…

Use of DIAGNOdent and VistaProof in diagnostic of Pre-Cavitated Caries Lesions—A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

2019

Objective: To analyse the published evidence of the validity of DIAGNDOdent and VistaProof in diagnosing carious depths in pre-cavitated lesions. Material and methods: A systematic review was carried out after identifying a total of 184 articles, including 27 concerning the qualitative review and a subsequent meta-analysis. The quality of the studies was evaluated by using the QUADAS-2 tool. Results: For DIAGNOdent, the sensitivity value was 0.77, the specificity value was 0.75 and AUC was 0.81 for the global meta-analyses. In relation to subgroups, the values estimated 0.85, 0.76 and 0.86, respectively, for the in vivo group and 0.71, 0.75 and 0.83 for the in vitro group. For VistaProof, s…
