Evaluation of the primary stability in dental implants placed in low density bone with a new drilling technique, osseodensification: an in vitro study

2020

Background Primary stability is an important key determinant of implant osseointegration. We investigated approaches to improve primary implant stability using a new drilling technique termed osseodensification (OD), which was compared with the conventional under-drilling (UD) method utilized for low-density bones. Material and Methods We placed 55 conical internal connection implants in each group, in 30 low-density sections of pig tibia. The implants were placed using twist drill bits in both groups; groups Under Drilling (UD) and Osseodensification (OD) included bone sections subjected to conventional UD and OD drilling, respectively. Before placing the implants, we randomized the bone s…

Warum ist Pränataldiagnostik in der Diskussion? Eine Einführung

2017

Prenatal diagnosis has been a subject of intense discussion since it became technically achievable. This is because the results it provides can dramatically change the attitude of mothers towards their unborn children, and can lead to considerable social pressure to abort the child. These undesirable effects might come as a surprise, given that prenatal testing was primarily intended to allow better care for infants waiting to be born. The possible risks of invasive procedures and the only statistical evidence of results are the factors most responsible for the ambivalent attitudes that surround prenatal diagnosis. Another significant factor is the discrepancy between the general availabili…

Persistent Left Superior Vena Cava Significance in Prenatal Diagnosis—Case Series

2022

The persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is a congenital heart anomaly reported in 0.3–0.5% of the general population and can be associated with congenital heart diseases in up to 8% of cases. Prenatal identification of PLSVC is important to prompt an extended cardiac and extracardiac fetal examination. We retrospectively reevaluated anomaly scans performed in our unit in a 2-year interval according to the national guidelines to evaluate the incidence of PLSVC and its association with prenatal morbidity. In our population, the incidence of PLSVC was 0.31%, and we found a low association with cardiac and extracardiac anomalies. The standard sections (three-vessel and trachea view, four…

Study que Stion What are the long term trends in the total (live births, fetal deaths, and terminations of pregnancy for fetal anomaly) and live birth prevalence of neural tube defects (NTD) in Europe, where many countries have issued recommendations for folic acid supplementation but a policy for mandatory folic acid fortification of food does not exist? Method S This was a population based, observational study using data on 11 353 cases of NTD not associated with chromosomal anomalies, including 4162 cases of anencephaly and 5776 cases of spina bifida from 28 EUROCAT (European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies) registries covering approximately 12.5 million births in 19 countries betwe…

Aneurysma des Ductus arteriosus Botalli

2000

A congenital aneurysm of the ductus arteriosus Botalli was detected by chest X-ray as an intrathoracic mass in a 7-day-old infant. Following confirmation of the diagnosis by echocardiography and MRI the aneurysm was successfully resected via left lateral thoracotomy without cardiopulmonary bypass. The postoperative course was uneventful. Six years after operation the patient is asymptomatic and growing normally. An intrathoracic mass may be considered in the differential diagnosis especially in infants and children. Aneurysms of ductus arteriosus potentially are associated with serious complications. Timely diagnosis and early surgical intervention are decisive for prevention of serious com…

Racial disparity and prognosis in patients with mouth and oropharynx cancer in Brazil.

2022

Oral and oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Populations in situations of social vulnerability tend to have higher incidences of cancer, a higher proportion of late diagnosis, greater difficulties in accessing health services, and, consequently, worse prognosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between race/skin color and OPC prognosis in Brazil. This is a cross-sectional epidemiological study using OPC data from the National Cancer Institute between the years 2000 and 2019. The selected variables were: gender, race/skin color, age, education, smoking and alcohol consumption, stage of the disease and disease status at …

Management of odontogenic infection of pulpal and periodontal origin

2007

The dental biofilm is a complex bacterial ecosystem that undergoes evolution, maturing and development, and thus leads to odontogenic infection. The infection is normally located in the tissues of the dental organ itself, and follows a chronic course of evolution. However, bacterial pathogens express virulence factors in the biofilm, and this together with changes in host immunity, may cause clinical exacerbations and spread of infection to other areas of the body. Odontogenic infection management should take into consideration the fact that therapeutic success lies in the control of the infectious aetiologic agent, using mechanical-surgical debridement and/or antimicrobial therapy. Debride…
