A SCAN-SADS comparison study of psychotic subjects and their first-degree relatives

1993

Two diagnostic interviews, the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (lifetime version) (SADS-LA) and the Schedule for the Clinical Assessment of Neuropsychiatry (SCAN) were compared for main diagnoses and for their acceptibility to psychotic subjects and their psychiatrically well relatives. Broad agreement for DSM-III, DSM-III-R and draft ICD-10 diagnoses was good, although there were areas of disagreement between the two interviews which are discussed.

Value of whole-body magnetic resonance imaging for screening multifocal osteonecrosis in patients with polymyositis/dermatomyositis

2017

To assess the value of coronal short-tau inversion recovery whole-body MRI (STIR-WBMRI) for screening osteonecrosis in patients with polymyositis (PM)/dermatomyositis (DM).The imaging and medical records of 129 patients with PM/DM who met the Bohan and Peter diagnostic criteria were retrospectively analyzed. STIR-WBMRI was performed in all patients. 18 patients had follow-up STIR-WBMRI. 12 patients underwent regional knee and/or hip MRI while 25 patients underwent radiography of the lower extremities.STIR-WBMRI detected osteonecrosis in 15 (11.6%) patients. 38 joints were affected (mean, 2.5 per patient; range, 1-5 joints). Of the 38 joints affected by osteonecrosis, 33 had no clinical symp…

Egg donation, surrogate mothering, and cloning: attitudes of men and women in Germany based on a representative survey

2009

Objective To determine opinions and attitudes of the German general population toward the treatment methods of reproductive medicine: egg donation, surrogate mothering, and reproductive cloning. Design Representative survey. Setting German general population: face-to-face interviews at home with 2,110 persons, aged 18–50 years. Patient(s) Patients were not included. Intervention(s) No interventions took place. Main Outcome Measure(s) Approval and disapproval of treatment methods of reproductive medicine and preimplantation genetic diagnosis were assessed by questionnaires regarding medical, age, reasons, or general. Result(s) Overall, the diverse treatment methods of reproductive medicine f…

Dynamic posturography findings predict balance status in vestibular schwannoma patients.

2007

OBJECTIVE To test whether condition 5 score (C5S) and condition 6 score (C6S) of the sensory organization test of computerized dynamic platform posturography (CDPP) differ between vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients with and without vestibular symptoms. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective review of prospectively collected data. SETTING Tertiary academic referral center. PATIENTS Two hundred and sixteen consecutive patients with a histological diagnosis of a VS (103 women; 113 men; age range, 18-78 years; median, 54 years) who had been preoperatively evaluated by CDPP. A hundred and twelve patients had a history of vertigo, dizziness, and/or imbalance, and 104 patients had neither present nor past ve…

Indeterminate focal liver lesions incidentally discovered at gray-scale US: role of contrast-enhanced sonography.

2011

OBJECTIVES: to assess the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in the characterization of focal liver lesions (FLLs) incidentally discovered but indeterminate at gray-scale ultrasound (US). MATERIALS AND METHODS: one hundred forty-two consecutive patients with 174 FLLs (169 benign and 5 malignant) incidentally discovered but indeterminate at gray-scale US, underwent CEUS after the administration of SonoVue. Two readers independently reviewed CEUS scans and: (1) classified each lesion as malignant or benign on a 5-point scale of confidence by means of definite diagnostic criteria; (2) provided if possible a specific diagnosis; (3) were requested if further imaging was needed for lesio…

Early detection of the risk of developing psychiatric disorders: a study of 461 Chinese university students under chronic stress

2019

Chronic stress, a characteristic of modern time, has a significant impact on general health. In the context of psychiatric disorders, insufficient coping behavior under chronic stress has been linked to higher rates of (1) depressive symptoms among subjects of the general population, (2) relapse among patients under treatment for clinical depression, and (3) negative symptoms among subjects with an elevated vulnerability to psychosis. In this normative study we assessed basic coping behavior among 461 Chinese freshman university students along with their consumption behavior and general health in terms of regular exercises, physical health, psychosomatic disturbances, and mental health. The…

Evidence of unilateral isolated utricular hypofunction

2010

The findings demonstrate that an enduring unilateral utricular dysfunction, possibly together with canal hypofunction, can occur after labyrinthine disease or injury. They also suggest that unilateral, isolated utricular dysfunction - or utricle paresis - can occur, representing a novel entity in the differential diagnosis of peripheral vestibular function. The occurrence of subjective visual vertical (SVV) asymmetry in the presence of symmetric vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) also confirms that the information from the utricles, rather than the saccules, dominates SVV estimation. To determine the incidence of unilateral utricular hypofunction. The retrospective clinical study d…

The Role of Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Cholesteatoma Diagnosis and Follow-up: Study With the Diffusion PROPELLER Technique

2012

Abstract Introduction and objectives The diagnosis of cholesteatoma is based on clinical evaluation and computed tomography. New non-echo-planar diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, without intravenous contrast, are capable of differentiating cholesteatoma from inflammatory tissue, cholesterol granuloma and granulation tissues. The technique is very helpful in differential diagnosis of cholesteatoma, mainly after canal wall-up tympanoplasty surgery, to avoid routine second-look surgery in these patients. Congenital cholesteatoma and difficult cases can be detected and correctly diagnosed as well. The aim of this study was to evaluate sensitivity, specificity, posi…

Symptoms, course, and complications of abdominal attacks in hereditary angioedema due to C1 inhibitor deficiency.

2006

Recurrent abdominal attacks belong to the cardinal and most distressing symptoms of hereditary angioedema (HAE) due to C1 inhibitor deficiency. They are characterized by crampy pain, but may include vomiting, diarrhea, and other features. Detailed clinical data about the symptoms and course of abdominal attacks have not been reported. We retrospectively observed a total of 33,671 abdominal attacks in 153 patients with HAE including a prospectively examined subgroup of 23 patients. Symptoms, course, frequency of attacks, and complications were analyzed. The relation of mild, moderate, and severe attacks was 1:1.4:5.6 in the prospective part of the study. Extra-abdominal symptoms preceded the a…

Relationships between 24 h blood pressure load and target organ damage in patients with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension.

2001

Objective: To analyse the relationships between 24 h blood pressure load (the percentage of systolic/diastolic blood pressures exceeding 140/90 mmHg while awake and 120/80 mmHg during sleep) and some indices of hypertensive target organ involvement, independently of the mean level of 24 h blood pressure. Methods: One hundred and thirty patients with mild-to-moderate hypertension underwent 24 h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, ocular fundus examination, microalbuminuria assay and two-dimensional guided M-mode echocardiography. The study population was divided into subsets according to the systolic and diastolic 24 h blood pressure load values predicted from the regression equation relat…
