In-hospital death according to dementia diagnosis in acutely ill elderly patients: the REPOSI study.

2011

The aim of the study was to explore the association of dementia with in-hospital OBJECTIVE:The aim of the study was to explore the association of dementia with in-hospital death in acutely ill medical patients. METHODS: Thirty-four internal medicine and 4 geriatric wards in Italy participated in the Registro Politerapie SIMI-REPOSI-study during 2008. One thousand three hundred and thirty two in-patients aged 65 years or older were enrolled. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association of dementia with in-hospital death. Socio-demographic characteristics, morbidity (single diseases and the Charlson Index), number of drugs, and adverse clinical events during hospitalizatio…

Value of magnetic-resonance cholangio-pancreatography (MRCP) after unsuccessful endoscopic-retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP).

1997

Background and Study Aims: The present study tries to evaluate the success rate of MRCP when two attempts by experts to perform ERCP in a center failed. Patients and Methods: From March 1996 to December 1996 thirteen patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The MR cholangiopancreatograms were acquired using commercially available software in a clinical MR scanner (Magnetom Expert 1T-Scanner, Siemens, Erlangen, Germany). MRCP utilized heavily T2-weighted turbo-spin echo sequences with fat supression (HASTE). Maximum intensity projection (MIP) of the pancreatic duct and biliary tree was then carried out. Additionally, T1-weighted sequences were obtained using the breath-hold technique. Resu…

Prestroke antiplatelet therapy and early prognosis in stroke patients: the Dijon Stroke Registry

2012

Background and purpose Previous antiplatelet therapy (APT) in cardiovascular prevention is common in patients with first-ever stroke. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of APT on early outcome in stroke patients. Methods All first-ever strokes from 1985 to 2011 were identified from the population-based Stroke Registry of Dijon, France. Demographic features, risk factors, prestroke treatments and clinical information were recorded. Multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate the associations between pre-admission APT and both severe handicap at discharge, and mortality at 1 month and 1 year. Results Among the 4275 patients, 870 (20.4%) were previously treated with APT. Severe han…

Perforated giant mycotic aneurysm of mitral valve in a drug-addicted young man: Rare complication of infective endocarditis

2017

Infective endocarditis (IE) affects patients at high clinical risk and may present as an acute and rapidly progressive, subacute or chronic infection. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography represent the key diagnostic method in IE diagnosis. In particular, three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography represents the imaging technique that allows to establish with adequate accuracy dimensions, shape, and localization of endocarditis vegetations. In our case, we show a huge vermiform mycotic aneurysm in an immunodeficient young drug-addicted man with severe mitral valve regurgitation and the additive value of three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography in this specifi…

Obesity modifies the relationship between ambulatory blood pressure and natriuresis in children

2001

The objective in the present study was to evaluate if obesity beginning in the first two decades of life influences the relationship between ambulatory blood pressure and urinary sodium excretion.Eighty-five obese and 88 non-obese children aged 3-19 years were included in the study. For each subject, a 24h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and a complete urine collection were simultaneously performed according to the protocols designed. The averages of ambulatory blood pressure and of the urinary excretion rates for sodium, potassium and creatinine were calculated separately for 24-h, awake and sleep periods as defined by a mini-diary.Weight and sodium excretion are directly associated w…

Clinical findings of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy: results from a multicenter international study

2008

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy consists of reversible systolic left ventricular apical ballooning associated with chest pain. Electrocardiographic abnormalities and the minimal rise of serum cardiac markers are similar to those in acute myocardial infarction, but without evidence of myocardial ischemia or injury. To date, many reports concerning this kind of acute reversible heart failure have been published, but the information available about the management of affected patients is scarce and the clinical data are incomplete. AIMS: In the present study, we report a collection of 40 patients who were affected by Takotsubo cardiomyopathy obtained in a multicentric international study, …

Computer-Aided Detection and diagnosis for prostate cancer based on mono and multi-parametric MRI: A review

2015

Prostate cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer of men all over the world. In the last few decades, new imaging techniques based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) have been developed to improve diagnosis. In practise, diagnosis can be affected by multiple factors such as observer variability and visibility and complexity of the lesions. In this regard, computer-aided detection and computer-aided diagnosis systems have been designed to help radiologists in their clinical practice. Research on computer-aided systems specifically focused for prostate cancer is a young technology and has been part of a dynamic field of research for the last 10years. This survey aims to provide a comprehen…

Usefulness of the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio in predicting long-term mortality in ST segment elevation myocardial infarction.

2007

Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (N/L) has been associated with poor outcomes in patients who underwent cardiac angiography. Nevertheless, its role for risk stratification in acute coronary syndromes, specifically in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), has not been elucidated. We sought to determine the association of N/L maximum value (N/L max) with mortality in the setting of STEMI and to compare its predictive ability with total white blood cell maximum count (WBC max). We analyzed 515 consecutive patients admitted with STEMI to a single university center. White blood cells (WBC) and differential count were measured at admission and daily for the first 96 hour…

Validity of the Novel Taiwan Lymphoscintigraphy Staging and Correlation of Cheng Lymphedema Grading for Unilateral Extremity Lymphedema

2018

Objective: The aim was to validate the new Taiwan Lymphoscintigraphy Staging, correlate it with Cheng Lymphedema Grading (CLG) and evaluate the treatment outcomes of unilateral extremity lymphedema. Background: No consensus has been reached for diagnosis and staging for patients with lymphedema among medical specialties. Methods: We included 285 patients with unilateral extremity lymphedema using lymphoscintigraphy. Lymphoscintigraphy was correlated to clinical symptoms and signs, and classified into normal lymphatic drainage, partial obstruction, and total obstruction. Inter- and intraobserver reliability of Taiwan Lymphoscintigraphy Staging, correlation between Taiwan Lymphoscintigraphy S…

A Survey of Prostate Segmentation Methodologies in Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance and Computed Tomography Images

2012

Prostate segmentation is a challenging task, and the challenges significantly differ from one imaging modality to another. Low contrast, speckle, micro-calcifications and imaging artifacts like shadow poses serious challenges to accurate prostate segmentation in transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images. However in magnetic resonance (MR) images, superior soft tissue contrast highlights large variability in shape, size and texture information inside the prostate. In contrast poor soft tissue contrast between prostate and surrounding tissues in computed tomography (CT) images pose a challenge in accurate prostate segmentation. This article reviews the methods developed for prostate gland segmenta…
