Die rechnergestützte Diabeteseinstellung

1985

Blood glucose self-monitoring is essential to stabilize diabetes on a normoglycemic level. But often patients do not find the correct insulin adaptation. Therefore, we developed a computerized system which adapts insulin doses using a control matrix. During a first in-patient period we had a remarkable blood glucose normalization and stabilization.

Evaluation of the Burden of HPV-Related Hospitalizations as a Useful Tool to Increase Awareness: 2007–2017 Data from the Sicilian Hospital Discharge …

2020

In light of the implementation of human papillomavirus (HPV) prevention strategies, epidemiological studies in different geographical areas are required in order to assess the impact of HPV-related diseases. The purpose of the present study was to describe the burden of HPV-related hospitalizations in Sicily. A retrospective observational study estimated 43,531 hospitalizations attributable to HPV from 2007 to 2017. During the observed period, there was a decrease for all HPV-related conditions with a higher reduction, among neoplasms, for cervical cancer (annual percent change (APC) = &minus

Resistin: An Inflammatory Cytokine. Role in Cardiovascular Diseases, Diabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome

2014

Resistin is an adipocyte- and monocyte-derived cytokine which has been implicated in the modulation of insulin action, energy, glucose and lipid homeostasis. Resistin has been associated with insulin resistance and many of its known complications. As a molecular link between metabolic signals, inflammation, and vascular dysfunction, resistin can be proposed as playing a significant role in the heightened inflammatory state induced by metabolic stress linked to excessive caloric intake, thus contributing to the risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In this review, we highlighted the role of resistin, as an inflammatory cytokine, in the…

Pharmacological treatments for opiate and alcohol addiction: A historical perspective of the last 50 years.

2018

Addiction pharmacotherapy aims to prevent drug abstinence symptoms, reduce drug craving and relapse, and normalize physiologic functions disrupted by chronic use of the drug. During the last 50 years, there has been an enormous revolution in pharmacotherapy for drug addiction. From abstinence as practically the only treatment option available, there are now multiple drugs on the market that have proved their efficacy in treating opiate and alcohol disorders. The present review will focus on the pharmacological treatments of the drugs whose consumption most affects individuals and society: alcohol and opiates. We will review the drugs most widely prescribed to prevent relapse and maintain ab…

Role of neurophysiology in the clinical practice of primary pediatric headaches

2007

The role of electrophysiological studies in pediatric headaches is controversial. In childhood headaches, neurophysiological examinations are of interest for potential clinical use because they are noninvasive and are scarcely influenced by environmental factors or drug use. Electrophysiological studies in childhood headache principally explored the role of electroencephalographic (EEG) evaluations in migraine, while less evidence has been reported about other neurophysiological techniques, such as evoked potentials, event-related potentials, and, less often, transcranial magnetic stimulation. In this brief review, we point out our attention to the aid of neurophysiological methods in the c…

Preclinical progress with CHF2819, a novel orally active acetylcholinesterase inhibitor

2002

(-)-(3aS,8aS,1S)-1,2,3,3a,8,8a-hexahydro-1,3a,8-trimethylpyrrolo[2,3-b]indol-5-ol-2′-ethylphenylcarbamate N-oxide hydrochloride (CHF2819) is a novel, orally active acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (AChEI) for Alzheimer's disease (AD). CHF2819 appears as a selective inhibitor of AChE, being 115 times more potent against this enzyme than butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE). Moreover, CHF2819 appears more selective for inhibiting central (brain) than peripheral (heart) AChE. In vivo studies show that CHF2819 significantly increases acetylcholine (ACh) levels in young adult rat hippocampus in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, aged animals exhibit a marked increase in hippocampal concentrations of this…
