Web counseling: A new health discourse
2011
The current research seeks to analyse a corpus formed by question entries on health issues that appeared in biomedical/health sites and forums. The focus of the paper is to identify the dimension of reality portrayed in health web-discourse. The samples collected were analysed individually and then organised in tables in order to find discourse patterns for structure and organization of moves together with their functional meaning. For each move, grammatical items were identified in order to assess the dimension of evidentiality, modality, and affect. The writer's attitude toward the stance is analyzed through epistemic modality; the reliability and the qualification of source-of-informatio…
Bodily dimensions of reading and writing practices on paper and digitally
2015
The bodily aspects of reading/writing practices are investigated in Finland. The paper is considered more adaptive to varied reading purposes than the screen.Handwriting is described as a more flexible and relaxed practice than typing.Skills determine less than materials and images the practices of reading/writing.Digital interfaces determine the ways we read and write less than suggested. This article investigates the different shapes in which reading and writing practices occur when paper/pen are compared with keyboard/screen. The focus is on the bodily aspects of these practices. Reading and writing are viewed as techniques of the body, which over the years have become increasingly mediat…
Doctor-patient exchanges in web counselling
2011
There are two overall approaches to doctor-patient interaction: the biomedical one and the socio-relational one. The biomedical approach is the most common and tends to explore the asymmetrical doctor-patient relationship. with the doctor seeking information about the patient’s complaints, giving a diagnosis and prescribing a treatment. The aim of this kind of communication is to create a good relationship in order to exchange information and facilitate treatment-related decisions. However, it is well-known that the production of talk is linked to the context. The relationship between doctor and patients can be performed online, through specific collaborative care service sites. It is still…
Dynamic-shared Pharmacophore Approach as Tool to Design New Allosteric PRC2 Inhibitors, Targeting EED Binding Pocket.
2020
Abstract: The Polycomb Repressive complex 2 (PRC2) maintains a repressive chromatin state and silences many genes, acting as methylase on histone tails. This enzyme was found overexpressed in many types of cancer. In this work, we have set up a Computer-Aided Drug Design approach based on the allosteric modulation of PRC2. In order to minimize the possible bias derived from using a single set of coordinates within the protein-ligand complex, a dynamic workflow was developed. In details, molecular dynamic was used as tool to identify the most significant ligand-protein interactions from several crystallized protein structures. The identified features were used for the creation of dynamic pha…
A Machine Learning-Based Prediction Platform for P-Glycoprotein Modulators and Its Validation by Molecular Docking
2019
P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is an important determinant of multidrug resistance (MDR) because its overexpression is associated with increased efflux of various established chemotherapy drugs in many clinically resistant and refractory tumors. This leads to insufficient therapeutic targeting of tumor populations, representing a major drawback of cancer chemotherapy. Therefore, P-gp is a target for pharmacological inhibitors to overcome MDR. In the present study, we utilized machine learning strategies to establish a model for P-gp modulators to predict whether a given compound would behave as substrate or inhibitor of P-gp. Random forest feature selection algorithm-based leave-one-out random sampl…
Reliability of Virtual Screening Methods in Prediction of PDE4Binhibitor Activity
2015
Identification of active ligands using computational methods is a challenging task. For example, molecular docking, pharmacophore modeling, and three dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship models (3D-QSAR) are widely used methods to identify novel small molecules. However, all these methods have, in addition to advantages, also significant pitfalls. The aim of this study was to compare some commonly used computational methods to estimate their ability to separate highly active PDE4B-inhibitors from less active and inactive ones. Here, 152 molecules with pIC 50 -range of 3.4-10.5, originating from six original studies were used. High correlation coefficients by using dockin…
Designing and evaluating collaboration in a virtual game environment for vocational learning
2008
Especially in vocational education, attention should be paid not only to the use of new technological solutions but also to collaborative learning and cooperative working methods in order to develop students' skills for their future jobs. This study involves a design experiment including the design process of a new game environment, description of the script developed for this game, as well as the empirical study with multiple data collection methods, data analysis, results and conclusions for further work. The aim of the study was twofold. Firstly, we aimed to develop a game environment to simulate the work context of a vocational design process, and secondly, to investigate how effective …
