The presence of a woman increases testosterone in aggressive dominant men

In line with the challenge hypothesis, this study investigated the effects of the presence of a woman on the testosterone (T) levels of young men. An informal contact with a woman of approximately 5 min resulted in an increase in salivary T among men. These effects occurred particularly in men with an aggressive dominant personality. In addition, higher salivary T levels were related to a more aggressively dominant personality, being sexual inactive for a month or more, and not being involved in a committed, romantic relationship. Type 1 Muscle Fiber Hypertrophy after Blood Flow–restricted Training in Powerlifters

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of blood flow restricted resistance exercise (BFRRE) on myofiber areas (MFA), number of myonuclei and satellite cells (SC), muscle size and strength in powerlifters. Farm-related exposures and childhood brain tumours in seven countries: results from the SEARCH International Brain Tumour Study.

A total of 1218 cases of childhood brain tumours (CBT) and 2223 control subjects from the general population were included in a population-based case-control study conducted in nine centres in seven countries. Mothers were asked about farm- or agriculture-related exposures. Significantly elevated odds ratios (OR) for CBT were associated with children's personal and maternal prenatal exposure while living on a farm with pigs (child OR = 1.7, mother OR = 2.3), horses (child OR = 1.6, mother OR = 1.8), dogs (child OR = 1.5, mother OR = 1.5) and cats (child OR = 1.5, mother OR = 1.7). Sustained water immersion is thought to modulate orthostatic tolerance to an extent dependent on the duration and repetition over consecutive days of the diving sessions. Abstract DDR1 has been linked to schizophrenia (SZ) and myelination. Here, we tested whether DDR1 variants in people at risk for SZ influence white matter (WM) structural variations and cognitive processing speed (PS). First, following a case-control design (Study 1), SZ patients (N = 1193) and controls (N = 1839) were genotyped for rs1264323 and rs2267641 at DDR1, and the frequencies were compared. We replicated the association between DDR1 and SZ (rs1264323, adjusted P = 0.015). High Cryptosporidium prevalences in healthy Aymara children from the northern Bolivian Altiplano.

The prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection was determined in four Aymara communities in the Bolivian Altiplano, between the city of La Paz and Lake Titicaca, at an altitude of 3,800-4,200 meters. Single stool specimens were randomly collected from 377 5-19-year-old students, all apparently asymptomatic. The total prevalence (31.6%) is possibly the highest reported among healthy humans (a maximum of 9.8% and 2.0% in coprologic surveys in underdeveloped and developed countries, respectively) and one of the highest even in symptomatic subjects. Surrogate data approaches to assess the significance of directed coherence: Application to EEG activity propagation

This paper addresses the topic of evaluating the significance of frequency domain measures of causal coupling in multivariate time series through generation of surrogate data. The considered approaches are the traditional Fourier Transform (FT) algorithm and a new causal FT (CFT) algorithm for surrogate data generation. Testing Frequency-Domain Causality in Multivariate Time Series

We introduce a new hypothesis-testing framework, based on surrogate data generation, to assess in the frequency domain, the concept of causality among multivariate (MV) time series. The approach extends the traditional Fourier transform (FT) method for generating surrogate data in a MV process and adapts it to the specific issue of causality. Identification of two novel polymorphisms and a rare deletion variant in the human dopamine D4 receptor gene

We report two novel polymorphisms and a rare deletion variant in the human dopaine D4 receptor gene. The two polymorphisms are characterized by single base pair substitutions, namely a G-->C transversion changing codon 11 from GGG (encoding Gly) to CGG (encoding Arg) and a C-->T transition in position -11 upstream from the start codon. The Arg11 variant occurs at a frequency of about 1% and the C-->T transition at a frequency of about 7% in German control subjects (n = 148). Allele frequencies observed in patients suffering from schizophrenia (n = 256) and bipolar affective disorder (n = 99) were similar. Desmin-related myopathies are marked by accumulation of desmin, which is often familial and associated with cardiomyopathy. When multifocal this excess is characterized by inclusions such as cytoplasmic or spheroid bodies, when disseminated the excess is called granulofilamentous material. Excess of desmin might represent an abnormal type of protein metabolism.
