Abstract Purpose In carcinomas of the uterine cervix, the tumor oxygenation status has been shown to be a prognostic indicator that is independent of treatment modality. In vitro studies suggest gene amplification and polyploidization to be among the major consequences of hypoxia (with or without consecutive reoxygenation) and to be associated with treatment resistance and tumor progression. 7E olfactory receptor gene clusters and evolutionary chromosome rearrangements

Olfactory receptor (OR) genes of the 7E subfamily have been duplicated to multiple regions throughout the human genome. Segmental duplications containing 7E OR genes have been associated with both pathological and evolutionary chromosome rearrangements. Many of these breakpoint regions coincide with breaks of chromosomal synteny in the mouse, rat and/or chicken genomes. Collectively, these data suggest that 7E OR-containing regions represent hot spots of genomic instability.

The chromosome bands 15q24.1-15q24.3 contain a complex region with numerous segmental duplications that predispose to regional microduplications and microdeletions, both of which have been linked to intellectual disability, speech delay and autistic features. Loss of heterozygosity at the short arm of chromosome 3 in renal‐cell cancer correlates with the cytological tumour type

A majority of renal-cell tumours retain heterozygosity at the short arm of chromosome 3. To investigate possible histopathological differences between tumours with and without such losses, we compared loss of heterozygosity data from 51 tumours with 1 histological and 2 different cytological classifications of renal-cell tumour. Using the cytological classification of Thoenes et al., we only found tumours with loss of heterozygosity in these authors' clear-cell category. Possibly, only these tumours arise by a mechanism of double loss of a tumour-suppressor gene on 3p, non-clear-cell renal tumours having a different genetic background. Evolutionary conservation and function of the human embryonic stem cell specific miR-302/367 cluster

miRNA clusters define a group of related miRNAs closely localized in the genome with an evolution that remains poorly understood. The miR-302/367 cluster represents a single polycistronic transcript that produces five precursor miRNAs. The cluster is highly expressed and essential for maintenance of human embryonic stem cells. We found the cluster to be highly conserved and present in most mammals. In primates, seed sequence and miRNA structure are conserved, but inter-precursor sequences are evolving. This report describes a 16-year-old girl with short stature (-5 standard deviations), normal puberty, panic attacks, absence epilepsy, some stigmata of Turner syndrome, and a Madelung deformity. Routine chromosomal analysis revealed a female karyotype with one abnormal chromosome X, with the suspicion of additional material on the short arm. With fluorescent in situ hybridization and array-multiplex amplifiable probe hybridization methodology, a complex aberration was detected, with a deletion of the distal part of Xp22.33 (including the short-stature homeobox gene) and a duplication of Xp22.32-p22.12 proximal to the deleted segment. In this thesis we present and study the ideal duplication, a new construction within the class of the relative ideals of a numerical semigroup $S$, that, under specific assumptions, produces a relative ideal of the numerical duplication $SJoin^b E$, for some ideal $E$ of $S$. We prove that every relative ideal of the numerical duplication can be uniquely written as the ideal duplication of two relative ideals of $S$; this allows us to better understand how the basic operations of the class of the relative ideals of $SJoin^b E$ work.
