Factors that affect the permeability of commercial hollow-fibre membranes in a submerged anaerobic MBR (HF-SAnMBR) system
2013
A demonstration plant with two commercial HF ultrafiltration membrane modules (PURON (R), Koch Membrane Systems, PUR-PSH31) was operated with urban wastewater. The effect of the main operating variables on membrane performance at sub-critical and supracritical filtration conditions was tested. The physical operating variables that affected membrane performance most were gas sparging intensity and back-flush (BF) frequency. Indeed, low gas sparging intensities (around 0.23 Nm(3) h(-1) m(-2)) and low BF frequencies (30s back-flush for every 10 basic filtration relaxation cycles) were enough to enable membranes to be operated sub-critically even when levels of mixed liquor total solids were hi…
Wastewater nutrient removal in a mixed microalgae-bacteria culture: effect of light and temperature on the microalgae-bacteria competition.
2018
[EN] The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of light intensity and temperature on nutrient removal and biomass productivity in a microalgae¿bacteria culture and their effects on the microalgae¿bacteria competition. Three experiments were carried out at constant temperature and various light intensities: 40, 85 and 125¿µE¿m¿2¿s¿1. Other two experiments were carried out at variable temperatures: 23¿±¿2°C and 28¿±¿2°C at light intensity of 85 and 125¿µE¿m¿2¿s¿1, respectively. The photobioreactor was fed by the effluent from an anaerobic membrane bioreactor. High nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies (about 99%) were achieved under the following operating conditions: 85¿125¿µE¿…
A new method to valued efficiency of enzyme blend for pancreas tissue digestion.
2009
One of the best successful example of cell therapy is represented by islet transplantation since the '90. However islet isolation methods are not completely standardized yet. More than half of isolation procedures failed to isolate adequate islets for transplantation, due to variable pancreas condition, and to unpredictable enzymatic blend efficiency. Enzymes used for pancreas digestion are purified from Clostridium histolyticum; these enzymes has a broad substrate specificity and potent collagenolytic activity compared to vertebrate collagenases. However, a major obstacle in human islet isolation successful is due to the variability in composition and concentration of the collagenases used…
Onco-fetal/laminin-binding collagen from colon carcinoma: detection of new sequences.
1995
We have recently identified an oncofetal-laminin binding collagen (OF/LB) composed of three alpha chains, with the apparent molecular mass of about 100 kDa each, but bearing different pI. One of the chains appears markedly acidic in a bidimensional electrophoretic system, where the NEPHGE is used as first dimension separating gel, while the two more basic chains have similar migration as alpha 1(III) and alpha 1(I) collagen chains, respectively. Sequence analyses have been performed on CNBr-peptides, derived from pepsinized triple helical molecules and on tryptic fragments obtained after in gel digestion of the acidic band. The research of sequence homology with computerized databases indic…
Novel Antihypertensive Lactoferrin-Derived Peptides Produced by Kluyveromyces marxianus: Gastrointestinal Stability Profile and In Vivo Angiotensin I…
2014
Novel antihypertensive peptides released by Kluyveromyces marxianus from bovine lactoferrin (LF) have been identified. K. marxianus LF permeate was fractionated by semipreparative high performance liquid chromatography and 35 peptides contained in the angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory fractions were identified by using an ion trap mass spectrometer. On the basis of peptide abundance and common structural features, six peptides were chemically synthesized. Four of them (DPYKLRP, PYKLRP, YKLRP, and GILRP) exerted in vitro inhibitory effects on ACE activity and effectively decreased systolic blood pressure after oral administration to spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Stab…
Ultrastructural alterations and environmental exposure influence the opiate concentrations in hair of drug addicts
1995
Hair samples were taken at autopsy from the head of 1 male and 1 female subject both known as drug abusers. Some of the strands were bleached by in-vitro cosmetic treatment. The bleached hair as well as the original hair samples were partly exposed to water or soil prior to further investigations and drug monitoring. The exposure times were 4 weeks or 6 months for water and 6 months for soil. The hair fibers were examined by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and by scanning electron microscope (SEM) investigations. The electron microscope studies confirmed that all experimental conditions had produced morphological alterations in the hair fibers. After exposure to water or to soil for …
Gastric acid secretory responses induced by peptone are mediated by capsaicin-sensitive sensory afferent neurons
1992
The involvement of capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons in modulating acid-secretory responses to peptone, a product of protein digestion, has been investigated in the continuously perfused stomach of the urethan-anesthetized rat. Systemic neonatal pretreatment with capsaicin, which destroys primary afferent neurons, does not modify basal levels of acid secretion. Acid responses to intragastric perfusion with isotonic (0.5, 1, and 2.4%) or hypertonic (10 and 20%) solutions of peptone were reduced in capsaicin-treated rats. Intragastric perfusion with hypertonic mannitol (18%) did not stimulate secretion of acid. Systemic capsaicin pretreatment did not modify acid responses to intraperitone…
Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions by adopting anaerobic digestion technology on dairy, sow and pig farms in Finland
2011
Abstract The impact of anaerobic digestion (AD) technology on mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from manure management on typical dairy, sow and pig farms in Finland was compared. Firstly, the total annual GHG emissions from the farms were calculated using IPCC guidelines for a similar slurry type manure management system. Secondly, laboratory-scale experiments were conducted to estimate methane (CH4) potentials and process parameters for semi-continuous digestion of manures. Finally, the obtained experimental data were used to evaluate the potential renewable energy production and subsequently, the possible GHG emissions that could be avoided through adoption of AD technology on th…
The effect of prolonged storage time on asphalt rubber binder properties
2019
Abstract This study wants to provide fundamental understanding of prolonged storage time on asphalt rubber binder properties by performing an investigation on the variation of conventional properties, rheology and morphology of four asphalt rubbers maintained at 180 °C in low shear for different digestion/storage times up to 48 h. The analysed asphalt rubbers were manufactured by combining two different asphalt binder grades, pen 35/50 and pen 50/70, with both cryogenic and ambient crumb rubber. Results have shown that keeping asphalt rubber agitated at the above mentioned processing conditions, up to 48 h, is significantly detrimental when an ambient crumb rubber is used, while it seems no…
Direct determination by portable ED-XRF of mineral profile in cocoa powder samples
2019
Abstract The present study has exploited the rapidity of the analysis and the multi-elemental capability of the energy dispersive X- ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) technique for the mineral profile determination in cocoa powder. A fast, cheap and environmental sustainable method without reagent consumption or toxic waste generation has been proposed. The samples can be prepared in the form of pellets of 13 mm in diameter and 2–3 mm thickness. The different internal calibrations used by ED-XRF equipment did not provide accurate results when comparing the mineral profile with the concentration obtained by Inductively Couple Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) after microwave assisted di…
