Human Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone in Man: Dose-Response of Minute Ventilation and End-Tidal Partial Pressures of Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen*

The respiratory stimulant properties of iv injections of 33, 67, and 100 micrograms synthetic human corticotropin-releasing hormone (hCRH) were studied in 12 normal men in a single blind, placebo-controlled trial. All doses of hCRH induced a respiratory stimulation in every subject, and the stimulation was dose dependent. The onset of respiratory stimulation occurred within 15-30 sec after hCRH infusion was started. Initially, there was an increase in tidal volume (VT), followed by an increase in respiratory rate. The maximum minute ventilation (VE) occurred 60-120 sec after starting the injection. The 33-micrograms hCRH dose induced a 35% increase in VE from 6.3 +/- 0.6 (+/- SD) to 9.7 +/-…

A breathing-retraining procedure in treatment of sleep-onset insomnia: theoretical basis and experimental findings.

Increase in CO2 has a sedative effect upon the central nervous system, and the beginning of sleep coincides with modifications in breathing, decrease in ventilation, and in pCO2 increase. In this paper is described a technique of breathing that is useful in producing drowsiness in a very short time. 46 insomniacs were randomly allocated to either a treatment or control condition. In the former, patients were trained in the breathing process. The control group was taught no breathing process. Latencies to sleep for the insomniacs confirmed that the breathing process was useful in producing drowsiness. Theoretical bases are discussed.

Light scattering in artificial fog and simulated with light scattering filter.

Disability glare, affecting e.g. road safety at night, may result either from intraocular light scattering or from external conditions such as fog. Measurements were made of light scattering in fog and compared with intraocular straylight data for normal eyes and eyes with simulated cataract. All measurements were made with a direct compensation flicker method. To estimate light scattering levels in fog, straylight measurements were carried in a fog chamber for different densities of fog. Exposure to ambient air pollution during pregnancy and preterm birth: A Spanish multicenter birth cohort study

Air pollution has been suggested as a risk factor for preterm delivery; however, the scientific evidence on this impact remains inconsistent. Alterations involved with the intervertebral disc degeneration are partly well described, however, it is not so well known how collagen network is affected by the disease. We analyzed the rate of collagen biosynthesis (estimated by the enzymic activities of prolyl 4-hydroxylase and galactosylhydroxylysyl glucosyltransferase) and the level of hydroxylysylpyridinoline and lysylpyridinoline crosslinks both in normal (n=7) and degenerated (n=7) human annulus fibrosus. Major gender difference in association of FTO gene variant among severely obese children with obesity and obesity related phenotypes.

Recent studies have shown that SNPs in the FTO gene predispose to childhood and adult obesity. In this study, we examined the association between variants in FTO and KIAA1005, a gene that maps closely to FTO, and obesity, as well as obesity related traits among 450 well characterised severely obese children and 512 normal weight controls. FTO showed significant association with several obesity related traits while SNPs in KIAA1005 did not. When stratified by gender, the FTO variant rs9939609 showed association with obesity and BMI among girls (P = 0.006 and 0.004, respectively) but not among boys. Enhanced Role of Transition Metal Ion Catalysis During In-Cloud Oxidation of SO2

Global sulfate production plays a key role in aerosol radiative forcing; more than half of this production occurs in clouds. We found that sulfur dioxide oxidation catalyzed by natural transition metal ions is the dominant in-cloud oxidation pathway. The pathway was observed to occur primarily on coarse mineral dust, so the sulfate produced will have a short lifetime and little direct or indirect climatic effect. Taking this into account will lead to large changes in estimates of the magnitude and spatial distribution of aerosol forcing. Urban forests are regularly managed for human safety and aesthetic reasons, but they are crucial habitat for many species. Removals of undergrowth occur commonly in these forests, yet the ecological consequences of these operations are poorly understood. We sampled ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) and vascular plants along 20-m edge gradients in Finnish urban forests, in five stands treated 0.5−2.5 years earlier with undergrowth removal and in five untreated stands.
