This thesis presents a study on ultra-short pulse propagation at 160-Gb/s in dispersion managed optical fiber lines. In a first part, we describe the experimental design of a SHG-FROG setup able to characterize high repetition rate pulse trains. Secondly, we demonstrate the efficiency of multiple four wave mixing phenomenon for the generation of a 160-GHz pulse train through the compression of a sinusoidal beat-signal. Then, in order to compare the experimental and theoretical results, we present the development of an optical fiber characterization benchtop based on modulational instability. Effects of spatial dispersion and damping on exciton absorption

Exciton absorption is studied in the spatially dispersive case. The energy-propagation properties of the medium are used to define the absorption coefficient. The interplay of dispersion and damping in determining the absorption coefficient is discussed and a critical value of the damping above which the dispersion effects disappear is derived analytically. Furthermore, the dependence of the spectral and of the integrated absorption coefficient on the auxiliary boundary condition is discussed.

Agglomeration and dispersion of economic activities in and around Paris: An exploratory spatial data analysis

The agglomeration patterns of twenty-six manufacturing and service sectors in and around Paris in 1999 are analysed. The method used measures the intensity of spatial agglomeration and identifies the location patterns of economic sectors. First the locational Gini coefficient and Moran’s I statistics of global spatial autocorrelation are computed. These provide different but complementary information about the spatial agglomeration of the sectors under study. Then exploratory spatial data analysis tools are applied. Moran scatterplots and local indicators of spatial association statistics reveal great diversity in location patterns across sectors.
Structure of pion photoproduction amplitudes

We derive and apply the finite energy sum rules to pion photoproduction. We evaluate the low energy part of the sum rules using several state-of-the-art models. We show how the differences in the low energy side of the sum rules might originate from different quantum number assignments of baryon resonances. We interpret the observed features in the low energy side of the sum rules with the expectation from Regge theory. Finally, we present a model, in terms of a Regge-pole expansion, that matches the sum rules and the high-energy observables.
Uniaxial Pressure Effects on the Dielectric Properties of the PLZT-x/65/35 (x = 9.75 and 10) Ceramics

The influence of uniaxial pressure (0-1000 bars) applied parallel to the ac electric field on the dielectric properties of PLZT-x/65/35 ceramics (x = 9.75 and 10) was investigated. The results show that the applied stress has a significant influence on the dielectric properties of PLZT ceramics. Applying uniaxial pressure leads to the reduction of the electric permittivity (ϵ) peak and the frequency dispersion. Moreover, the peak of ϵ becomes diffuse and shifts to a higher temperature with increasing pressure. Interactions of benzodiazepines with human serum albumin. Circular dichroism studies.

The circular dichroism spectra of 12 benzodiazepine derivatives studied in presence of human serum albumin are presented. Nearly all substances give biphasic extrinsic Cotton effects. At the CD maxima the molar ellipticities and the anisotropy factors are calculated. The influence of the chemical structure of the benzodiazepines on the induced Cotton effect is discussed. There is a linear correlation between the anisotropy factors and the logarithms of the partition coefficients of the substances. It is suggested that the phenyl ring of the benzodiazepine molecule is one of the essential groups for the binding of these substances to human serum albumin.
Phononic heat transport in the transient regime: An analytic solution

We investigate the time-resolved quantum transport properties of phonons in arbitrary harmonic systems connected to phonon baths at different temperatures. We obtain a closed analytic expression of the time-dependent one-particle reduced density matrix by explicitly solving the equations of motion for the nonequilibrium Green's function. This is achieved through a well-controlled approximation of the frequency-dependent bath self-energy. Our result allows for exploring transient oscillations and relaxation times of local heat currents, and correctly reduces to an earlier known result in the steady-state limit. International audience; The temperature dependence of refractive indices of optical materials is characterized in this work by what we call their normalized thermo-optic coefficients. These ones are determined experimentally through interferometric measurements of thermal expansion, and changes in optical thickness at a few laser wavelengths as function of temperature. A suitable vectorial formalism applied to these data allows predicting the thermal evolution of the refractive index all over the useful range of transparency. The Alignment of Galaxy Structures

We analyzed the orientation of the sample of ACO galaxy clusters. We examined the alignment in a subsample of 1056 galaxy structures taken from the Panko–Flin (2006) Catalog with known BM morphological types. We were looking for a correlation between the orientation of the cluster and the positions of neighboring clusters. The Binggeli effect (the excess of small values of the Δθ angles between the direction toward neighboring clusters and the cluster position angle) is observed, having a range up to about 45 h−1 Mpc.
