Results of Angioplasty With Double-Layer Mesh Stent and Protection Systems of the Extra- and Intracranial Dissection of Cephalic Arteries
2023
Purpose: Although a majority of cervical artery dissections can be managed conservatively, patients presenting with cerebral embolization or significant stenosis require a more aggressive approach. However, complications associated with endovascular repair are quite frequent and optimal interventional technique still remains to be established. Materials and methods: The aim of this post hoc survey was to analyze results of endovascular treatments for symptomatic dissections of the internal carotid and vertebral arteries, which were performed under protection and with the use of double-layer mesh stents. During endovascular procedure catheters, stents and protection systems were tailored acc…
A Non-Local Mode-I Cohesive Model for Ascending Thoracic Aorta Dissections (ATAD)
2018
This paper presents a non-local interface mechanical model to describe aortic dissection. In this regard, the mode-I debonding problem based on a cohesive zone modeling is endowed with non-local terms to include long-range interactions that are present in multi-layered biological tissue. Such non-local effects are related to the collagen fibers that transmit forces between non-adjacent elements. Numerical simulations are provided with different values of the non-local parameters in order to show the effect of the non-locality during the debonding processes.
Does Hysteroscopic Dissection of Partial Uterine Septum Represent a Risk Factor for Placental Abnormalities in Subsequent Pregnancy Compared with Con…
2022
Background: Hysteroscopic septum dissection (HSD) is thought to improve fertility and pregnancy outcomes. However, the available literature suggests that uterine surgery can cause placental abnormalities in subsequent pregnancies. Methods: A case–control study was performed at the University Medical Center of Ljubljana, Department of Human Reproduction, from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018. The primary outcome was the association between HSD and the occurrence of placental abnormalities. We included women who underwent HSD due to infertility. Age-matched women who underwent hysteroscopic surgery for other issues were considered as controls. In addition, we divided the groups according to…
A brief anatomo-surgical dissection guide to human mediastinal anatomy: results of the collaboration between the University of Palermo and the Univer…
2018
In the summer of 2017, thanks to an agreement between the University of Malta and the University of Palermo, a group of students from the University of Palermo, who had already taken the anatomy exams and had a good knowledge of English, went for a 4 week period to the University of Malta to follow a dissection course . The students dissected skin, the sternum, the vessels, the nerves, analyzed the pericardium, the lungs and all the mediastinal organs. This work proves to be a small dissection guide for young medical students who want to learn the basics of dissection and the relevant topographical anatomy. The students were selected by the University of Palermo because of the good quality …
A BRIEF DISSECTION GUIDE TO HUMAN THORAX
2020
The purpose of this technical report is to present that, in summer 2018, a group of students from the University of Palermo did at the University of malta. The students have the experience to dissected a thorax under a guide to expert dissectors. This work would be also a small dissection guide for young students who want to learn the main bases of dissection
Endovascular treatment of spontaneous isolated abdominal aortic dissection
2016
Isolated abdominal aortic dissection is a rare clinical disease representing only 1.3% of all dissections. There are a few case series reported in the literature. The causes of this pathology can be spontaneous, iatrogenic, or traumatic. Most patients are asymptomatic and symptoms are usually abdominal or back pain, while claudication and lower limb ischemia are rare. Surgical and endovascular treatment are two valid options with acceptable results. We herein describe nine cases of symptomatic spontaneous isolated abdominal aortic dissection, out of which four successfully were treated with an endovascular approach between July 2003 and July 2013. All patients were men, smokers, symptomati…
EXPERIENCES THAT “REACH THE HEART”. TAKING PART IN A WHOLE BODY DISSECTION COURSE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MALTA
2017
This article summarizes the activities of the four-week whole body dissection course the main authors participated in in August 2016 at the dissection hall of the University of Malta (UoM). Our team comprised 10 second-year medicine students from University of Palermo chosen among who had passed the Human Anatomy exam brilliantly. The need to move to the UoM to take part in such activity derives from the lack of practice approach in Italian schools of medicine, focused mostly on the theoretical studies, neglecting practical experience. The heart dissection reveal itself as a huge opportunity to finally apply our anatomical knowledge, improving it and enabling us to compare images took from …
Dynamic 4D Blood Flow Representation in the Aorta and Analysis from Cine-MRI in Patients
2007
International audience; Abstract: Natural evolution of aortic disease is characterized by a diameter increase that can result in aortic dissection or rupture. Currently the evaluation of risk of rupture or dissection is based on the size of the aorta. However, this parameter is not always relevant and it appears necessary to define new parameters. In this perspective, 3D velocity imaging acquired with ECG gated velocity-encoded cine-MRI allows the aortic blood flow study. As the acquired images are not directly usable, the present study proposes a 4D-representation Of aortic blood flow in order to optimize the visualization of the particularities of non-laminar flow within the aorta. Image …
Isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery: a case report and literature review
2014
Isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery is rare; it is predominantly observed in men with the highest incidence in those over 40 years old. Contrast-enhanced multi-detector computed tomography is considered essential for the diagnosis, therapeutic management and follow-up. The therapeutic approach ranges from conservative medical treatment to surgery or endovascular stent placement, but there are, to date, no approved guidelines. We report the case of a 68-year old man who entered our Emergency Department just for mild abdominal pain, which later proved to be due to acute dissection of the superior mesenteric artery.
An update on hypertensive emergencies and urgencies
2015
Severe acute arterial hypertension is usually defined as 'hypertensive crisis', although 'hypertensive emergencies' or 'hypertensive urgencies', as suggested by the Joint National Committee and the European Society of Hypertension, have completely different diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. The prevalence and demographics of hypertensive emergencies and urgencies have changed over the last four decades, but hypertensive emergencies and urgencies are still associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Different scientific societies have repeatedly produced up-to-date guidelines; however, the treatment of hypertensive emergencies and urgencies is still inappropriate, with potentia…
