An Investigation of the Cutting Process for Chip Breaking Monitoring in Turning of Steels
1998
This paper presents some results of an experimental study on chip breaking monitoring when turning steels with chip forming inserts. In the first part of this study the recognition of chip forms by means of cutting force analysis in the frequency domain is described. Generally, the present work is concerned with the use of the interface control factor for determining the transition from unacceptable chip forms to the chip breaking. For this purpose experiments under approximately orthogonal machining conditions including measuring the shear strain, the cutting energy and the average interface temperature are carried out. The obtained results confirmed that the initiation of acceptable chip …
U.I.R.D.A. – Unbuilt Italian Rationalism Digital Archive
2018
For twenty years, the architecture of Italian rationalism through the digital modelling has been investigated. Very often, the production of a model and the consequent representation of tridimensional views, in many case studies, as outcome of the research on architecture have been considered. Actually, the digital model, intended as a critical tool, has to be conceived as a ‘starting point' for graphic analysis of architecture and not as the outcome. Indeed, it is associated to other graphics, sometimes not ‘deducted' from the model, useful for the understanding/translation of architecture. The construction of the model is not the construction of a simple image, operation, which is often c…
Optimal Blankholder Force Path in Sheet Metal Forming Processes: An Al Based Procedure
1999
Abstract Blankholder force plays a fundamental role in the deep drawing process mechanics since it controls, by friction, the material flow into the die cavity. The availability of computer controlled hydraulic presses in the industries promoted a new research field focused on the definition of optimal BHF histories, function of the punch displacement; such studies were aimed to the determination of the so called “process window”, i.e. the BHF path which permits to obtain the maximum height sound component avoiding both wrinkling and tearing. In the paper a design procedure is proposed in order to determine the optimal BHF path in an axisymmetric deep drawing process: in particular, a close…
Springback effect evaluation in three-dimensional stamping processes at the varying of blankholder force
2006
The quantitative evaluation of elastic springback in sheet metal stamping processes is still today a very interesting research topic, since this phenomenon causes a manufacturing shape defect. A measurement technique based on the shadow moiré method, already developed by the present authors, has been further upgraded and applied to evaluate the springback phenomenon in the deep drawing of square boxes, the basic three-dimensional stamping process. In particular this technique is able to determine the final lateral surface of the drawn parts, once extracted from the dies, and to compare such surface with the ideal one derived from the die's computer-aided design (CAD) geometry. Proper quant…
The Third Competition for Ernesto Basile’s Palace of Justice. Analysis, Conjectural Reconstruction and Photo Insertions
2022
The competition for the Palazzo di Giustizia in Rome takes place in four phases that develop between 1884 and 1887. The project of the third competition (1886-1887), drawn up by Ernesto Basile (Palermo 1857-1932), reveals a great maturity design that transforms the complex functional program into a rigorous neo-Renaissance style building. The jury recognizes the quality of the project and selects it for the final phase by invitation (1887) together with that one of Guglielmo Calderini, who will be the winner. The original drawings of the unrealized work are kept at the Basile Endowment of the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo: among them there are sketches, preparatory…

El problema de la representación del espacio construido (la arquitectura) no puede prescindir de la concepción de espacio físico que durante siglos el hombre ha formulado.
Thermal analysis and new insights to support decision making in retrofit and relaxation of heat exchanger networks
2011
International audience; Pinch analysis offers a rational framework for identifying energy saving targets and designing efficient heat recovery networks, especially in process industry. Several scientists have contributed to improve and automate the original pinch method over the last decades, increasing its capability to deal with a number of specific issues; the expertise of the analyst, however, remains determinant in achieving optimal results. In this paper a procedure for retrofit of existing networks is proposed, based on an integrate use of several techniques (either existing or innovative). The diagnosis of the existing network and of a "Minimum Energy Requirement" configuration emer…
Vitruvio y la idea estética del Decorum
2001
El término latino decorum, que Cicerón asimila a la belleza moral, residiendo ésta en lo conveniente o apropiado, tiene sus orígines en el pensamiento estético socrático.
In-situ NDT testing procedure as an integral part of failure analysis of historical masonry arch bridges
2015
Abstract A nineteenth-century masonry arch bridge was analyzed as an illustrative example to explain the role of in-situ test campaigns in failure analysis and retrofit design. Test results were studied to find out the advantages of each technique, with the aim of proposing an optimized in-situ testing procedure. Standard static penetrometer, flat jack, thermographic and georadar in-situ tests were conducted. Traffic effects were analyzed by means of vibrational tests. The experimental analysis performed to investigate damage on the bridge structures shows the degree of reliability offered by each technique in evaluating specific information and reproducing the global behavior of the struct…
