Emigrant Communities of Latvia: Diaspora of Hope

2015

Accretion in strong field gravity with eXTP

2019

In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced 'spectral-timing-polarimetry' techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process.

Thermal induced conformational changes involved in the aggregation of beta-lactoglobulin

2005

Aggregation of proteins appears to be associated most often with conformational and structural changes that lead to exposure of some apolar residues. Depending on the native structure of the protein in exam, aggregation is a process that involves different mechanisms, whose time of occurrence and interplay can depend upon temperature. To single out information about the multistages of the aggregation pathway, here we investigate the thermally induced conformational and structural changes of the beta-lactoglobulin (BLG). The experimental approach consists in studying steady-state fluorescence spectra of intrinsic chromophores, two tryptophans, and Anylino-Naphthalene-Sulfonate dye (ANS) mole…

Regioselective Hydrogenation of a 60-Carbon Nanographene Molecule toward a Circumbiphenyl Core.

2019

Regioselective peripheral hydrogenation of a nanographene molecule with 60 contiguous sp2 carbons provides unprecedented access to peralkylated circumbiphenyl (1). Conversion to the circumbiphenyl core structure was unambiguously validated by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, NMR, FT-IR, and Raman spectroscopy. UV–vis absorption spectra and DFT calculations demonstrated the significant change of the optoelectronic properties upon peripheral hydrogenation. Stimulated emission from 1, observed via ultrafast transient absorption measurements, indicates potential as an optical gain material.

Present status and first results of the final focus beam line at the KEK Accelerator Test Facility

2011

ATF2 is a final-focus test beam line which aims to focus the low emittance beam from the ATF damping ring to a vertical size of about 37 nm and to demonstrate nanometer level beam stability. Several advanced beam diagnostics and feedback tools are used. In December 2008, construction and installation were completed and beam commissioning started, supported by an international team of Asian, European, and U.S. scientists. The present status and first results are described.

Transition-Edge Sensors for Particle Induced X-ray Emission Measurements

2013

In this paper we present a new measurement setup, where a transitionedge sensor detector array is used to detect X-rays in particle induced X-ray emission measurements with a 2 MeV proton beam. Transition-edge sensors offer orders of magnitude improvement in energy resolution compared to conventional silicon or germanium detectors, making it possible to recognize spectral lines in materials analysis that have previously been impossible to resolve, and to get chemical information from the elements. Our sensors are cooled to the operation temperature (65 mK) with a cryogen-free adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator, which houses a specially designed X-ray snout that has a vacuum tight window…
