Nulla dies sine linea : avauksia Erkki Melartinin vaikutteisiin, verkostoihin ja vastaanottoon henkilö- ja reseptiohistoriallisena tutkimuksena
2008
Ranta-Meyerin työ on ensimmäinen Erkki Melartinista tehty väitöskirja.Ranta-Meyer tarkasteli Erkki Melartinin omia opettajasuhteita, pedagogisia vaikutteita ja verkostoja sekä institutionaalista kehittäjän roolia nykyisin Sibelius-Akatemiana tunnetun oppilaitoksen johtajana j…
Ferdinands Erdmanis Štolls. Sēņu pasaule
2023
Depressive symptoms during adolescence: Do learning difficulties matter?
2011
To examine whether learning difficulties play a role in depressive symptoms, 658 Finnish adolescents were asked to complete scales for depression three times during the transition to post-comprehensive education. They also reported on their learning difficulties and feelings of inadequacy as a student. The results showed that learning difficulties prospectively predicted depressive symptoms. Moreover, the impact of learning difficulties was mediated via inadequacy as a student: learning difficulties predicted feelings of inadequacy as a student which, in turn, contributed to greater increases in depressive symptoms. Finally, gender moderated the association between learning difficulties an…
DOBRO : a prediction error correcting robot under drifts
2016
We propose DOBRO, a light online learning module, which is equipped with a smart correction policy helping making decision to correct or not the given prediction depending on how likely the correction will lead to a better prediction performance. DOBRO is a standalone module requiring nothing more than a time series of prediction errors and it is flexible to be integrated into any black-box model to improve its performance under drifts. We performed evaluation in a real-world application with bus arrival time prediction problem. The obtained results show that DOBRO improved prediction performance significantly meanwhile it did not hurt the accuracy when drift does not happen.
Dependency on un-captured GDP as a source of resilience beyond economic value in countries with advanced ICT infrastructure: Similarities and dispari…
2015
Abstract The majority of countries with advanced information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure have been experiencing extended stagnation due to an “embedded” trap in ICT advancement. However, certain countries have been able to sustain a high level of ICT- driven global competitiveness. This suggests that in these contexts there is resilience beyond economic value. Finland and Singapore can be considered countries of resilience with respect to ICT-driven global competitiveness because of their continued GDP growth despite the recession. While both countries share significant similarities including institutional strength in ICT, they demonstrate noteworthy disparities in the…
Revisiting rainfall to explore exam questions and performance on CS1
2015
The Rainfall problem comprises small tasks that have been used to investigate student performance in introductory programming. We conducted several kinds of analyses to inform our understandings of student performance in CS1 relating to this problem. We analyzed implementation approaches and program errors, as in related studies, and also explored the role of test writing vis-a-vis the most common student error. Finally, using correlation analyses and manual inspection of the exam answers, we studied how well the Rainfall problem served as an exam question. The students' implementation choices reflected their familiarity with particular loop constructs, while the single most common error co…
Performance of an asymmetric and asynchronous decode-and-forward FBMC relay system
2014
End-to-end link performance of an asymmetric and asynchronous dual-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relay system built up using a causal multirate filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) technique operated under Rayleigh fading is presented. Three main performance measures namely bit error rate (BER), outage probability and channel capacity are used for this evaluation and approximate closed-form expressions for them are also made available. FBMC setup is modeled in exact form without any approximations while customizing to one of the most efficient subcarrier filter. Simulations are carried out in quasi-static multipath fading channels under symmetric, asymmetric, synchronous and asynchronous condition…
