Walking Training and Functioning Among Elderly Persons With Stroke: Results of a Prospective Cohort Study.

Abstract Objective To determine if 65- to 85-year-old persons who had a stroke within the previous 3-36 months can improve functioning and quality of life during walking rehabilitation. Design Prospective cohort study with 6-month follow-up. Setting Three inpatient rehabilitation centers and one outpatient rehabilitation center. Effect of isometric strength training of mechanical, electrical, and metabolic aspects of muscle function.

Monozygous twin pairs (two female and four male) were used in a strength training study so that one member of each pair served as training subject (TS) and the other members as nonexercising controls (CS). TS trained four times a week for 12 weeks with maximal isometric knee extensions of the right leg. The parameters studied included muscle strength, endurance time, electromyographic activity, and activities of several key enzymes in nonoxidative and oxidative muscle metabolism. Functioning of the Attentional Networks at Rest vs. During Acute Bouts of Aerobic Exercise

The present study explored the effects of three different activity conditions on three attentional functions: alerting, orienting, and executive control. A group of highly experienced cyclists performed the Attention Network Test–Interactions (Callejas, Lupiáñez, & Tudela, 2004) at rest, during moderate aerobic exercise, and during intense aerobic exercise. Results indicated that aerobic exercise accelerated reaction time and reduced the alerting effect compared with the rest condition. However, aerobic exercise did not modulate the functioning of either the orienting or the executive control attentional networks. Neuromuscular function and balance of prepubertal and pubertal blind and sighted boys

Aim: To compare the neuromuscular function and balance of blind prepuberty- and puberty-aged boys to those with normal sight. Methods: Thirty-three prepubertal (aged 9–13 y) and pubertal (aged 15–18 y) blind and sighted boys were tested for muscle mass thickness, electromyography and maximal isometric strength, dynamic explosive actions, and balance. Results: There was no difference in the muscle mass thickness, maximal strength or vertical jump between the blind and sighted boys. Maximal isometric strength and mobility among 75-year-old men and women.

The purpose of this study was to examine the association between maximal isometric strength and mobility among 75-year-old men and women. All those born in 1914 and resident in the city of Jyvaskyla in August 1989 comprised the study group (n = 388); 355 persons were interviewed at their homes (92%): 101 men (81% of all male residents) and 186 women (75%) participated in the laboratory strength tests. As part of the home interview the person's mobility at home, on stairs and outdoors was assessed using a four-point scale:--1 able, 2--able with difficulty, 3--needs help, 4--unable. Lysosomal changes related to ageing and physical exercise in mouse cardiac and skeletal muscles.

Physical exercise increased the activities of arylsulphatase, cathepsin D and β-glucuronidase in mouse skeletal muscle but not in cardiac muscle. Exercise-induced lysosomal response was more prominent in young adult than in senescent mice. The lipofuscin content of cardiac and skeletal muscles increased markedly during ageing and was also found to increase slightly after exertion in young mice, but not in senescent ones.
