The involvement of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in heart exercise-related angiogenesis

Background Little is known about the involvement of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in cardiac vascular remodelling induced by exercise. Our aim was to evaluate and localize MMP-2 and MMP-9’s activities in relation to capillary proliferation in mouse hearts trained for 15, 30 and 45 days. Methods Sixty-three mice were randomly assigned to 7 groups: four control sedentary groups (C0, C15, C30 and C45) and three groups trained by an endurance protocol (T15, T30 and T45). Exercise and recovery in frog muscle: metabolism of PCr, adenine nucleotides, and related compounds

The effects of exercise (swimming), fatigue, and recovery on the intracellular pH (pHi), energy-rich phosphates, and related metabolites were studied in the gastrocnemius muscle of common frogs (Rana temporaria) at 20 degrees C. Exercise caused a rapid decrease in the content of phosphocreatine (PCr) and a corresponding increase in that of Pi. The ATP level remained virtually constant for 1 min; its precipitous decrease during the following minute was associated with a rise in the contents of inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP) and NH4+, indicating a marked activation of AMP deaminase. Neuromuscular, metabolic and hormonal profiles of young tennis players and untrained boys.

This study compared the neuromuscular, metabolic and hormonal profiles of trained prepubescent tennis players and an untrained group. The boys in the experimental group (n = 9; mean age +/- S.D. = 11.4 +/- 0.5 years) had participated in tennis training for 2.3 +/- 1.0 years and the boys in the control group (n = 9; mean age +/- S.D. = 10.9 +/- 0.4 years) were normal active volunteers. The tennis players were found to be physically more active than the controls when the comparison was made for either 1 year (4.9 +/- 1.8 vs 2.6 +/- 2.5 times per week; P less than 0.05) or for 1 week (3.4 +/- 1.2 vs 0.4 +/- 0.5 times; P less than 0.001) preceding the tests. Effects of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide hydride on physical and mental performance

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide hydride (NADH) on maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), maximal anaerobic running time, and mental performance. Eight men were exposed to a supplement treatment (30 mg NADH as ENACHI tablets per day) and to a placebo treatment, each of 4 weeks' duration, in a balanced, double-blind, and cross-over design. The two treatments were separated by a 14-week wash-out period. The results indicated that VO2max, maximal anaerobic running time, and the ability to concentrate were similar in the NADH and placebo conditions. Ultra Trail Performance is Differently Predicted by Endurance Variables in Men and Women

AbstractThe study aimed to assess the relationship between peak oxygen uptake, ventilatory thresholds and maximal fat oxidation with ultra trail male and female performance. 47 athletes (29 men and 18 women) completed a cardiopulmonary exercise test between 2 to 4 weeks before a 107-km ultra trail.
