Comment to the Editorial by KS Park and EW Kang “Is only fixed positive airway pressure a robust tool for kidney protection in patients with obstruct…
2019
We thank doctors Park and Kang for their editorial that well summarized our article. Our common belief is that one of the possible consequences of untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an accelerated deterioration of kidney function, and that more knowledge would be necessary on the possible protective effects of OSA treatments. To our knowledge, so far the only OSA therapy whose effects on renal function have been tested is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and most , although not all studies, have demonstrated its benefits. Our own study, while confirming benefits of fixed CPAP, has demonstrated little effect of auto-adjusting CPAP (APAP). This finding may be of relevance a…

Missing Evidences in Cancer Genetics: The Retinoblastoma Paradigm
2008
BACKGROUND: Retinoblastoma (Rb) is the most common primary malignant intraocular tumour in childhood. The "two hit" theory, formulated by Knudson in 1971 to explain the variegated clinical expression of the disease, led to the discovery of the so called tumour suppressor genes and the identification of the Rb1 as the prototype of such genes. Mutations of the Rb1 gene are now commonly believed to be the "cause" retinoblastoma, although epidemiological, clinical, and biological evidences argue against it. MATERIAL/METHODS: The Authors have performed a systematic review of available data concerning clinical and diagnostic aspects of retinoblastoma, including molecular genetics. Meta analysis o…
Comments to the paper "do we really need new medical information about the Turin Shroud?".
2015
Abstract Following the interesting arguments raised in a recent letter to the editor, about a paper recently published in this journal, the authors are happy to take a cue from them to clarify some facts that have not been sufficiently treated for space. After a description of the methods used, arguments regarding a blunt trauma on the right shoulder with consequent dislocation, the position of the hands on the pubis with brachial plexus injury, and the wrist nailing that caused retracted thumbs are discussed in detail.

Hidden connections: Network effects on editorial decisions in four computer science journals
2018
Abstract This paper aims to examine the influence of authors’ reputation on editorial bias in scholarly journals. By looking at eight years of editorial decisions in four computer science journals, including 7179 observations on 2913 submissions, we reconstructed author/referee-submission networks. For each submission, we looked at reviewer scores and estimated the reputation of submission authors by means of their network degree. By training a Bayesian network, we estimated the potential effect of scientist reputation on editorial decisions. Results showed that more reputed authors were less likely to be rejected by editors when they submitted papers receiving negative reviews. Although th…
Happy birthday Hydrobiologia! 70 years young and still growing…
2018
Hydrobiologia started its existence in March 1948 by publishing a first volume of 476 pages, and already then focused on the biology and ecology of aquatic organisms. After 70 years, the focus of the journal is still similar, but the diversity of approaches increased during the seven decades of its existence. To celebrate the 70 years of Hydrobiologia, we here address some emerging trends in the history of publications in Hydrobiologia.
Sicilia. Un'isola, un continente, una rivista. Sicily: an Island, a Continent, a Magazine
2013
There are projects that come about like a custom dress sewn upon the body, designed not as …
