Psychometric Properties and a Preliminary Validation Study of the Italian Brief Version of the Communication Styles Inventory (CSI-B/I)
2020
People will typically develop a communication style that tends to be coherent with their own fundamental personality traits. The current debate on communication style acknowledges the construct of adaptive behavior as an appropriate area where to include both the strictly personal aspects and social learning and cultural assimilation, which translate into communicative style as a specific form of adaptation integrating the behavioral and personality perspectives. Due to the lack of instruments in the Italian psychometric scenario to assess communication styles, the present study included the translation and validation of the Italian short version of the Communication Styles Inventory (CSI-B…
Conciencia emocional, estados de ánimo e indicadores de ajuste individual y social en niños de 8-12 años
2014
Emotional awareness, mood and individual and social adjustment outcomes in children aged 8-12 years old. Abstract: Emotional awareness or conscious experience of emotion is a key concept related to different individual adjustment child outcomes, such as somatic complaints. This relationship, moderated by mood, has been found in preadolescent and adolescent population. However, little is known in younger children and including other adjustment outcomes, such as adaptation. Therefore, the objective of this work is to analyze the contribution of emotional awareness and mood upon different adjustment outcomes: somatic complaints and inadaptation (assessed by the test TAMAI), in children aged 8-…
Universal Patterns in Color-Emotion Associations Are Further Shaped by Linguistic and Geographic Proximity
2020
Many of us “see red,” “feel blue,” or “turn green with envy.” Are such color-emotion associations fundamental to our shared cognitive architecture, or are they cultural creations learned through our languages and traditions? To answer these questions, we tested emotional associations of colors in 4,598 participants from 30 nations speaking 22 native languages. Participants associated 20 emotion concepts with 12 color terms. Pattern-similarity analyses revealed universal color-emotion associations (average similarity coefficient r = .88). However, local differences were also apparent. A machine-learning algorithm revealed that nation predicted color-emotion associations above and beyond tho…
Socio-emotional Experience in Human Technology Interaction Design – A Fashion Framework Proposal
2021
Technology designers and developers can be understood as social experience (SE) mediators. In user experience (UX), notions of SE have served to identify and define the factors contributing to human-technology interaction (HTI). Three dominant perspectives have been promoted in UX discourse: 1) SE of brand, brand value and consumer culture; 2) technology design as mediator of human-to-human interactions; and 3) meaning generation through action and interaction between actors. Symbolic interactionalism understands meaning as occurring through dialogue, in the construction of the social self, promoting self-reflection as a social construction. This theorisation of social experience is valuabl…
Daily rhythms of young children in the 24/7 economy : A comparison of children in day care and day and night care
2017
The study explored temporal variation in children’s moods and compared children in regular day care with those in day and night care in Finland. To examine variation in children’s experiences, a mobile diary was used. The participants comprised 32 young children and their parents and day care personnel. Adults evaluated children’s moods three times daily over 1 week. A clear weekday–weekend rhythm was found among children in day care, who displayed more negative moods, due to frequent hurried mornings. Children in day and night care had more irregular mood rhythms. Boys were evaluated as displaying more negative moods than girls. peerReviewed
Socio-emotional Problems Experienced by Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in Ethiopia
2015
This study compares the socio-emotional problems experienced by deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students with those of hearing students in Ethiopia. The research involved a sample of 103 grade 4 students attending a special school for the deaf, a special class for the deaf and a regular school. Socio-emotional problems were measured using Goodman's self-report measure, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for children and adolescents. Participants were selected from seven towns in Ethiopia. The results show that, compared to the hearing sample, the DHH students experienced more severe socio-emotional problems across all dimensions, regardless of whether they were in special classes o…
The line model of form and emotion : perspectives on western design
2018
This paper introduces a new model of form, emotion, and semantics through a process of form abstraction utilizing lines. Understanding the emotional and semantic value of form is a complex task, and many theories have been developed. Analyzing the visual arts through line relationships and interactions is a conceptually novel approach and offers new avenues for advancing studies in form theory, theories of emotion and perception, and design generally. By examining literature in visual perception, form theory, and emotion, and by historically analyzing changes in form through the aesthetic arts and then reducing these aesthetic elements into basic linear foundations, we developed the line mo…
Exploring the Effectiveness of Dialectical Behavior Therapy Versus Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving in a Sample of P…
2021
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and systems training for emotional predictability and problem solving (STEPPS) are two treatment protocols for people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) that have received important empirical support. However, their possible differential effectiveness has not yet been studied. The objective of this study is to explore the effectiveness of these two treatment programs. A nonrandomized clinical trial was carried out in which both treatments were applied for six months. The sample consisted of 72 patients diagnosed with BPD. The results indicate that both groups experienced a statistically significant reduction in BPD symptom, emotional regulation, i…
LEARNING THE VALUE OF TIME IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION
2021
