Descriptive Epidemiology of Stomach Cancer in Ragusa, Sicily, 1981–1988
1992
An epidemiologic study was carried out on 475 incident cases of gastric cancer registered by the Ragusa Cancer Registry (Sicily) between 1981 and 1988. Distribution by sex, age, subsite, year of incidence, and survival was investigated. A reduction of incidence and mortality between 1981–84 and 1985–88 was observed in both sexes, and was more evident in males than in females. Survival was not significantly different for cancers of the various subsites.
Hemispheric cerebellar rTMS to treat drug-resistant epilepsy: case reports.
2005
Electrical stimulation of the cerebellar cortex by implanted electrodes has been shown to ameliorate refractory epilepsy. We investigated the potential therapeutic role of high-frequency cerebellar rTMS in patients affected by refractory epilepsy due to single or multiple foci. Six patients, three with single and three with multiple epileptic foci, underwent 20 rTMS sessions. Each session was given daily, excluding weekends, and consisted of two trains of 50 stimuli (5 Hz frequency and 90% motor threshold intensity), separated by 50s interval. rTMS was delivered through a focal coil (2 cm below and lateral to the inion) bilaterally in patients with multiple foci (two trains for hemisphere: …
Failure to find association between childhood abuse and cognition in first-episode psychosis patients
2012
AbstractThis study investigated the relationship between severe childhood abuse and cognitive functions in first-episode psychosis patients and geographically-matched controls. Reports of any abuse were associated with lower scores in the executive function domain in the control group. However, in contrast with our hypothesis, no relationships were found amongst cases.
Latency of interictal epileptiform discharges in long-term EEG recordings in epilepsy patients.
2015
AbstractPurposeTo assess the latency of interictal epileptiform discharges (IED) and seizures in long-term EEG recordings of patients with epilepsy.MethodIED latency was measured in 210 consecutive patients (mean (SD) age 38.6±13.9 years) with active epilepsy and the relationship to clinical variables was analyzed retrospectively. Median duration of EEG recording was 101.5h (95% confidence interval [CI] 92 to 117h).ResultsIEDs were absent in 45 (21.4%) and present in 165 (78.6%) patients who had a longer duration (p<0.001) and early onset (p<0.01) of epilepsy and more often had IEDs in prior standard EEGs (p<0.01), a structural etiology (OR 2.4, CI: 2.1–2.7), or temporal lobe epilepsy (OR 9…

On the limits of familiarity accounts in lexical decision: The case of repetition effects
2019
Recent modelling accounts of the lexical decision task have suggested that the reading system performs evidence accumulation to carry out some functions. Evidence accumulation models have been very successful in accounting for effects in the lexical decision task, including the dissociation of repetition effects for words and nonwords (facilitative for words but inhibitory for nonwords). The familiarity of a repeated item triggers its recognition, which facilitates ‘word’ responses but hampers nonword rejection. However, reports of facilitative repetition effects for nonwords with several repetitions in short blocks challenge this hypothesis and favour models based on episodic retrieval. T…
Transient seizure onset network for localization of epileptogenic zone: effective connectivity and graph theory-based analyses of ECoG data in tempor…
2018
Objective: Abnormal and dynamic epileptogenic networks cause difficulties for clinical epileptologists in the localization of the seizure onset zone (SOZ) and the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in preoperative assessments of patients with refractory epilepsy. The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of time-varying effective connectivity networks in various non-seizure and seizure periods, and to propose a quantitative approach for accurate localization of SOZ and EZ. Methods: We used electrocorticogram recordings in the temporal lobe and hippocampus from seven patients with temporal lobe epilepsy to characterize the effective connectivity dynamics at a high temporal resolution …
Cortisol and trait anxiety as relevant factors involved in memory performance in people with drug-resistant epilepsy
2018
People with drug-resistant epilepsy are exposed to unpredictable and uncontrollable seizures, which can be considered as a chronic stress condition. Additionally, these patients present memory deficits and a high prevalence of depression and anxiety. Cortisol, the main stress hormone, has a modulatory role on memory in healthy individuals and patients with emotional disorders, but its role in memory and emotional processes remains unclear in people with epilepsy. This study analyzes the differences in cortisol levels in people with epilepsy with high and low memory performance, and the relationships among cortisol levels, epilepsy-related factors, memory, anxiety, and depression. Fifty-two …
Correction to: Adjunctive Brivaracetam in Focal Epilepsy: Real‑World Evidence from the BRIVAracetam add‑on First Italian netwoRk Study (BRIVAFIRST)
2021
In randomized controlled trials, add-on brivaracetam (BRV) reduced seizure frequency in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy. Studies performed in a naturalistic setting are a useful complement to characterize the drug profile. This multicentre study assessed the effectiveness and tolerability of adjunctive BRV in a large population of patients with focal epilepsy in the context of real-world clinical practice. The BRIVAFIRST (BRIVAracetam add-on First Italian netwoRk STudy) was a retrospective, multicentre study including adult patients prescribed adjunctive BRV. Patients with focal epilepsy and 12-month follow-up were considered. Main outcomes included the rates of seizure-freedom, s…
Age at surgery as a predictor of cognitive improvements in patients with drug-resistant temporal epilepsy
2017
Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery is an effective procedure that can produce cognitive changes. However, the prognostic factors related with cognitive outcomes need to be better understood. The aim of the present study is to know if age at surgery is a reliable predictor of verbal memory competence and considering factors such as: hemisphere; type of surgery; pre-surgical seizure frequency; and epilepsy duration. Sixty-one typically dominant patients with drug-resistant TLE (34 with left TLE [L-TLE] and 27 with right TLE [R-TLE]) underwent a neuropsychological assessment before and a year after surgery. Results showed that R-TLE patients had better evolution in short- and long-term verba…
