Study of quantitative and qualitative variations in essential oils of Sicilian oregano biotypes

Essential oil (EO) was extracted using hydrodistillation from samples of Origanum vulgare subspecies hirtum (Link) Ietswaart, gathered from the wild in various parts of Sicily, Italy; GC-FID and GC-MS analyses were subsequently performed. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between essential oil yields and the geographical distribution of oregano wild populations based on variations in environmental factors as collection sites. Different species belonging to the genus Hypericum are distributed into many environments of Sicily, where they represent an important component of wild Sicilian flora (Giardina et al., 2007). In the context of the COVID-19 outbreak, the authors in this special issue came together within the Massive Microscopic Sensemaking (MMS) writing project in the spring of 2020. Collectively grappling with the impact of the extended pandemic, each paper in this issue touches on experiences of social isolation, making do, and a technological reaching out under conditions of a public health crisis. This introduction describes the issue’s ‘patchwork’ development which reflects an attempt to break from traditions of academic scholarship that often fail to recognize the value of emergent, and therefore uncertain, cross-disciplinary and collective work.

Tutkimus tarkasteli perhetaustan vaikutusta korkeasti koulutettujen työmarkkina-asemaan 2000-luvun Suomessa. Ilmiötä tutkittiin European Social Surveyn vuoden 2008 Suomen aineistolla. Aineiston kolmannen asteen tutkinnon suorittaneet jaettiin vanhempien ammattiasemaan perusteella kahtia yläluokkaisten ja muiden jälkeläisiin. Eritaustaisten korkeasti koulutettujen työmarkkina-asemia vertailtiin tarkastelemalla heidän sijoittumista työssä vaadittavien erityisten ammattitaitojen määrän, työn itsenäisyyden asteen ja tulojen mukaan määriteltyihin työntekijäryhmiin. Tänä päivänä yhä useampaa suomalaista lapsiperhettä koskettavat vanhempien epäsäännölliset työajat 24 tuntia vuorokaudessa auki olevan yhteiskunnan vuoksi. Erityisiä haasteita epäsäännölliset työajat ja arjen rytmit aiheuttavat perheille, joissa on vain yksi vanhempi huolehtimassa arjesta ja lapsista. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on kuvailla yksinhuoltajaäitien kokemuksia ja tunteita vanhemmuudesta eron jälkeen. Tutkimuksen avulla halutaan selvittää, millaista on vuorotyön ja perheen yhteensovittaminen yksinhuoltajavanhemman näkökulmasta.
