Association of low birth weight with myopic refractive error and lower visual acuity in adulthood: results from the population-based Gutenberg Health…

2017

PurposeLow birth weight (BW) is linked to impaired organ development in childhood, including altered ocular morphological and functional development. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether low BW has long-term effects on visual acuity and refraction in adulthood.MethodsThe Gutenberg Health Study is a population-based, observational cohort study in Germany, including 15 010 participants aged between 35 and 74 years. These participants were divided into three different BW groups (low: <2500 g; normal: between 2500 and 4000 g; and high: >4000 g). Best-corrected visual acuity and objective refraction were examined. We used multivariable linear regression models with adjustment for …

Prevalence of refractive errors in the European adult population: the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS).

2014

Objective To study the distribution of refractive errors among adults of European descent. Design Population-based eye study in Germany with15 010 participants aged 35–74 years. Methods The study participants underwent a detailed ophthalmic examination according to a standardised protocol. Refractive error was determined by an automatic refraction device (Humphrey HARK 599) without cycloplegia. Definitions for the analysis were myopia +0.5 D, astigmatism >0.5 cylinder D and anisometropia >1.0 D difference in the spherical equivalent between the eyes. Exclusion criterion was previous cataract or refractive surgery. Results 13 959 subjects were eligible. Refractive errors ranged from −21.5 to…

Nurses' decision-making, practices and perceptions of patient involvement in medication administration in an acute hospital setting.

2019

To describe nurses' decision-making, practices and perceptions of patient involvement in medication administration in acute hospital settings.Medication errors cause unintended harm to patients. Nurses have a major role in ensuring patient safety in medication administration practices in hospital settings. Investigating nurses' medication administration decision-making and practices and their perceptions of patient involvement, may assist in developing interventions by revealing how and when to involve patients during medication administration in hospital.A descriptive exploratory study design.Twenty nurses were recruited from two surgical and two medical wards of a major metropolitan hospi…

Pharmaceutical validation as a process of improving the quality of antineoplastic treatment

2006

Objective. To quantify the improvement added by standardization of pharmaceutical validation (PV) of antineoplastic treatment to the processes of prescription and preparation of the pharmacotherapeutic sequence, in terms of prevention and reduction of medication errors (ME). Design. Prospective cohort study during two years (from 2001-2002) for oncohaematologic patients (inpatients and outpatients) that compared the percentage of medication errors detected and resolved and the number of medication errors with potential clinical significance (severity value ≥4) intercepted during PV in both years. Results. During the PV processes, 202 ME were identified and resolved, which is the equivalent…

Misclassification of subjects with insulin resistance and associated cardiovascular risk factors by homeostasis model assessment index. Utility of a …

2009

Different methods are available for assessing insulin sensitivity in the fasting state. However, insulin resistance (IR) is initially a postprandial disturbance; and usually, when basal (fasting) disturbance appears, the process has been in progress for some time. Our aim was to investigate if a postprandial measurement, performing an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), is more sensitive than fasting values. We wished to identify early IR states in healthy, nonobese individuals and ascertain if this situation was associated with other cardiovascular risk factors. A total of 90 nonobese, nondiabetic, and nonsmoker individuals were studied. They were divided into 3 groups according to IR stat…

Vision evaluation in people with Down's syndrome.

1994

We tested the colour vision of 72 people with Down's syndrome using the Ishihara test and an anomaloscope. We found that 13 of the subjects, 6 males and 7 females, had defective colour vision according to Pickford's classification. In monocular vision 10 eyes were protan (five simple, three extreme and two deviant), one eye was simple deuteranomalous and the remaining eyes were normal: in binocular vision four of the subjects were protan (two simple and two deviant), two subjects were deutan (one simple and one deviant) and the rest were normal. Many of our subjects had lens opacities, strabismus, nystagmus, hypermetropia, high myopia and astigmatism, confirming literature reports. The cont…

Effect of 3rd-order aberrations on human vision

2007

To investigate the effect of 3rd-order aberrations on human vision.Grupo de Ciencias de la Visión, University of Murcia, Murcia, Spain. The 3rd-order aberrations coma and trefoil were induced with purpose-designed soft contact lenses, 3 inducing coma (low [0.05 microm], medium [0.13 microm], high [1.03 microm]) and 3 inducing trefoil (low [0.07 microm], medium [0.17 microm], high [0.96 microm]). Monocular high-contrast (HCVA) and low-contrast (LCVA) visual acuities and contrast sensitivity were measured in 11 subjects wearing contact lenses with a 5.0 mm artificial pupil. The reduction in HCVA and LCVA was statistically significant only for the highest coma and trefoil values (P.0001). For co…

The effect of spherical aberration on visual performance and refractive state for stimuli and tasks typical of night viewing

2018

Purpose: The aim of this work was to examine the impact of Seidel spherical aberration (SA) on optimum refractive state for detecting and discriminating small bright lights on a dark background. Methods: An adaptive-optics system was used to correct ocular aberrations of cyclopleged eyes and then systematically introduce five levels of Seidel SA for a 7-mm diameter pupil: 0, ± 0.18, and ± 0.36 diopters (D) mm−2. For each level of SA, subjects were required to detect one or resolve two points of light (0.54 arc min diameter) on a dark background. Refractive error was measured by adjusting stimulus vergence to minimize detection and resolution thresholds. Two other novel focusing tasks for si…

Isolated Endometriosis on the Rectus Abdominis Muscle in Women without a History of Abdominal Surgery: a Rare and Intriguing Finding

2009

We report 2 rare cases of endometriosis on the rectus abdominal muscle diagnosed incidentally during an operation for inguinal hernia repair in women with no surgical history. Two women sought medical attention for a mass found in the pubic abdominal wall. Only 1 woman reported occasional pain. At physical examination in both women, an ovoid swelling in the right pubic area was felt. One woman experienced pain on palpation, and one reported slight discomfort. Ultrasonography demonstrated a heterogeneous hypoechogenic formation with indistinct edges; diagnosis was difficult. Routine clinical and instrumental (pelvic ultrasonography) gynecologic examination in both patients performed shortly …

Improved accuracy of hysteroembryoscopic biopsies for karyotyping early missed abortions

2003

Abstract Objective To assess the potential of direct embryo and chorion biopsies obtained by hysteroembryoscopy for karyotyping early missed abortions. Design Clinical prospective descriptive study. Setting Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad, Valencia, Spain. Patient(s) Sixty-eight women (71 gestational sacs) with missed abortions. The gestational age on ultrasound was 6.3 weeks (range, 4–10 weeks). Intervention(s) Transcervical hysteroembryoscopy before curettage. Main outcome measure(s) Comparison between the cytogenetic results from hysteroembryoscopic biospies and those of the curettage material. Result(s) Hysteroembryoscopic biopsies could be taken in 97.2% of the gestational sacs. D…
