Perceptual Self-Awareness in Seneca, Augustine, and Olivi

This article traces the philosophical idea of self-perception from the times of ancient Stoicism to the thirteenth century by analyzing the views of Seneca, Augustine, and Olivi. The central argument is that they defend the same idea according to which self-preservation and the appropriate use of one’s body requires awareness thereof, despite the obvious contextual differences and the uncertainty of direct historical connections between the authors. The introduction of sexual pedagogy in kindergarten and in schools usually brings about tensions and conflicts which are often caused by the fact that parents are not involved. Important for reconciling the conflicting views is knowledge about the values that sexual pedagogy fosters and the aims it pursues. This contribution shows that aims and fundamental principles of sexual pedagogy are compatible with the major part of approaches to sexual pedagogy from a theological view. After that, the relationship between sexual pedagogy and sexual ethics is analyzed. Twenty-five years ago, robotics guru Joseph Engelberger had a mission to motivate research teams all over the world to design the ‘Elderly Care Giver’, a multitasking personal robot assistant for everyday care needs in old age. In this article, we discuss how this vision of omnipotent care robots has influenced the design strategies of care robotics, the development of R&D initiatives and ethics research on use of care robots.
