Shaping women's agency through temporality in "The life and activity of the holy and blessed teacher Syncletica"
2020
The present article attempts to discuss the relationship between two female characters, Thecla and Syncletica, against the wider theoretical background of temporality as it was perceived and construed through literary texts. Syncletica is portrayed as a ‘disciple’ of Thecla. However, while the apocryphal Acts of Paul and Thecla appear to be pervaded with an eschatological expectation, the Life of Saint Syncletica shows signs of a different temporality. The detailed description of the whole life of Syncletica, with an emphasis on the course of illness, reveals a temporality more focused on the stages of life. Building on this evidence, I aim to identify a set of key features that…
Bicommutants of reduced unbounded operator algebras
2009
The unbounded bicommutant $(\mathfrak M_{E'})''$ of the {\em reduction} of an O*-algebra $\MM$ via a given projection $E'$ weakly commuting with $\mathfrak M$ is studied, with the aim of finding conditions under which the reduction of a GW*-algebra is a GW*-algebra itself. The obtained results are applied to the problem of the existence of conditional expectations on O*-algebras.
Mutiskā tulkošana evaņģēliskajās draudzēs ar dievkalpojumiem krievu valodā
2017
Enhancing Joined-Up Government and Outcome-Based Performance Management through System Dynamics Modelling to Deal with Wicked Problems: the Case of S…
2015
The paper by Auping et al. (2015) focuses on the topic of societal ‘ageing’, that is, ‘a population process, caused by declining fertility and mortality rates, which manifests itself in the growing number of older persons in society’ (Huber, 2005). A broader definition frames societal ageing as a ‘demographic, structural, cultural and economic transformation resultant from the increase in the number and proportion of “older” people within society’ (Victor, 2005, p. 5). ‘Double societal ageing’ today characterizes most developed countries, which experience both an increase in the percentage of older people and in their life expectancy. In terms of public policy and finance, the relevance of …
School aspirations, cognitive skills and wage expectations of French Undergraduates
2013
en ligne : http://cemapre.iseg.utl.pt/educonf/2e3/files/submissions_to_web/Bonnard%20Claire_%20Giret%20Jean-Francois_Lambert-Le%20Mener%20Marielle.pdf; This paper aims to study the earnings expectations of first-year students at a French university and to compare them with the observed earnings of young people in the labour market for that same year. Our findings highlight the importance of the environment in which students make their choices about education. Expected earnings are proportionally higher when their parents seem to be involved in the careers guidance, even controlling for the effect of parental socio-economic status. The positive opinion of parents about the orientation or the…
Structure of longitudinal chromomagnetic fields in high energy collisions
2014
We compute expectation values of spatial Wilson loops in the forward light cone of high-energy collisions. We consider ensembles of gauge field configurations generated from a classical Gaussian effective action as well as solutions of high-energy renormalization group evolution with fixed and running coupling. The initial fields correspond to a color field condensate exhibiting domain-like structure over distance scales of order the saturation scale. At later times universal scaling emerges at large distances for all ensembles, with a nontrivial critical exponent. Finally, we compare the results for the Wilson loop to the two-point correlator of magnetic fields.
Adding Knowledge Extracted by Association Rules into Similarity Queries
2010
International audience; In this paper, we propose new techniques to improve the quality of similarity queries over image databases performing association rule mining over textual descriptions and automatically extracted features of the image content. Based on the knowledge mined, each query posed is rewritten in order to better meet the user expectations. We propose an extension of SQL aimed at exploring mining processes over complex data, generating association rules that extract semantic information from the textual description superimposed to the extracted features, thereafter using them to rewrite the queries. As a result, the system obtains results closer to the user expectation than i…
Demographic aspects of aging
2021
Population aging is occurring in almost all developed countries, albeit with differences in timing and intensity. This unprecedented phenomenon is evident not only in the change in the population age structure, but also in the impressive increase in the average length of life. After describing past, current, and future population trends, this contribution presents theories explaining the reasons for this long-term process that is completely reshaping the age structure of the population. It also describes the inequalities in aging (focusing in particular on the differences by gender, education, and cause of death), and introduces some measures of the individual health and economic consequenc…
The Challenges in Moving from Ageing to Successful Longevity
2014
During the last decades survival has significantly improved and centenarians are becoming a fast-growing group of the population. Human life span is mainly dependent on environmental and genetic factors. Favourable modifications of lifestyle factors (e.g. physical activity, diet and not smoking) and healthcare (e.g. effective vascular disease prevention) have also increased human life span. Genetic factors contribute to the variation of human life span by around 25%, which is believed to be more profound after 85 years of age. It is likely that multiple factors influence life span and we need answers to questions such as: 1) What does it take to reach 100?, 2) Do centenarians have better he…
