Dealing with risk: Gender, stakes, and probability effects

This paper investigates how subjects deal with financial risk, both "upside" (with a small chance of a high payoff) and "downside" (with a small chance of a low payoff). We find that the same people who avoid risk in the downside setting tend to make more risky choices in the upside one. The experiment is designed to disentangle the probability-weighting and utility-curvature components of risk attitudes, and to differentiate settings in which gender differences arise from those in which they do not. Women are more risk averse for downside risks, but gender differences are diminished for upside risks.

An experimental analysis of team production in networks

2010

Experimental and empirical evidence highlights the role of networks on social outcomes. In this paper we test the properties of exogenously fixed networks in team production. Subjects make the same decisions in a team-work environment under four different organizational networks: The line, the circle, the star, and the complete network. In all the networks, links make information available to neighbors. This design allows us to analyze decisions across networks and a variety of subjects’ types in a standard linear team production game. Freeze-out radii extracted from three-pion cumulants in pp, p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC

In high-energy collisions, the spatio-temporal size of the particle production region can be measured using the Bose-Einstein correlations of identical bosons at low relative momentum. The source radii are typically extracted using two-pion correlations, and characterize the system at the last stage of interaction, called kinetic freeze-out. In low-multiplicity collisions, unlike in high-multiplicity collisions, two-pion correlations are substantially altered by background correlations, e.g. mini-jets. Multi-resolution anisotropy studies of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory

We report a multi-resolution search for anisotropies in the arrival directions of cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory with local zenith angles up to $80^\circ$ and energies in excess of 4 EeV ($4 \times 10^{18}$ eV). This search is conducted by measuring the angular power spectrum and performing a needlet wavelet analysis in two independent energy ranges. The solvability of time-harmonic Maxwell equations in the 3D-case with non­homogeneous conductivities is considered by adapting Sobolev space technique and variational formulation of the probJem in question. Optimizing the θ23 octant search in long baseline neutrino experiments

Determination of the θ 23 octant will be an important goal for the next generation of neutrino oscillation experiments, as it will show whether the true value of θ 23 lies in the high octant, θ 23 > 45°, or in the low octant, θ 23 < 45°. In this work we investigate the prospects of studying the θ 23 octant in future long baseline neutrino experiments. Using the GLoBES software, we study the sensitivity to θ 23 octant in terms of baseline length and beam sharing and use the LBNO setup as our benchmark.
