The oculoauriculofrontonasal syndrome: Further clinical characterization and additional evidence suggesting a nontraditional mode of inheritance

2018

IF 2.264; International audience; The oculoauriculofrontonasal syndrome (OAFNS) is a rare disorder characterized by the association of frontonasal dysplasia (widely spaced eyes, facial cleft, and nose abnormalities) and oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum (OAVS)-associated features, such as preauricular ear tags, ear dysplasia, mandibular asymmetry, epibulbar dermoids, eyelid coloboma, and costovertebral anomalies. The etiology is unknown so far. This work aimed to identify molecular bases for the OAFNS. Among a cohort of 130 patients with frontonasal dysplasia, accurate phenotyping identified 18 individuals with OAFNS. We describe their clinical spectrum, including the report of new features…

Premis, càstigs i educació

2008

The challenges of monoaxial bone transport in orthopedics and traumatology

2017

Background. Bone defects represent the main challenging problem for the orthopedic surgeon and, consequently, they increase the duration of hospitalization, risk of complications and health expenditures. The aim of our observational, descriptive and retrospective study is to evaluate the outcomes of patients treated with a monolateral external fixator for bone defects greater than 3 cm. Material and methods. Between January 2003 and January 2013, 21 patients were treated at our center by bone transfer with a monolateral external fixator. The main etiologies were trauma in 17 cases (80.9%) and tumors in 4 cases (19.1%). Mean follow-up was 5 years for non-union and 3 years for tumors. Our cl…

Correction of Constricted Ear

1995

We present a case of moderate constricted ear corrected using a modified Tanzer's technique for the helical deformity and lengthening the lower third of the pinna with a cutaneous transposition flap from the retroauricular area. The operation begins with a rapid intraoperative expansion of the retroauricular skin. Then an incision is made on the posteromedial ear aspect and the ear is degloved using a subperichondral plane. The upper pole of the cartilage is expanded and rearranged by an anteriorly pedicled helical flap and a cartilaginous graft is taken from the constricted part of the concha. The lower third of the pinna is lengthened by a cutaneous transposition flap from the retroauricu…

Intra- and extracerebral blood flow changes and flushing after intravenous injection of human corticotropin-releasing hormone

1994

To study facial flush after systemic administration of human corticotropin-releasing hormone (hCRH) we injected 100 micrograms hCRH intravenously to ten healthy young men. The increase in facial temperature was measured by infrared camera. A significant increase in facial temperature of 1.39 degrees C +/- 0.3 was found within 7 min in all patients, which lasted up to 60 min, although facial flushing was visible in only 50% (5/10) of the probands. In a second experiment 100 micrograms hCRH was then administered to seven other healthy young men. Intra- and extracerebral blood flow velocity changes in the medial cerebral artery (MCA) and external carotid artery (ECA) were measured after hCRH a…

Optimal Response to Cardiac Arrest study: Defibrillation waveform effects

2001

Abstract Introduction: Advances in early defibrillation access, key to the “Chain of Survival”, will depend on innovations in defibrillation waveforms, because of their impact on device size and weight. This study compared standard monophasic waveform automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) to an innovative biphasic waveform AED. Material and methods: Impedance-compensated biphasic truncated exponential (ICBTE) and either monophasic truncated exponential (MTE) or monophasic damped sine (MDS) AEDs were prospectively, randomly assigned by date in four emergency medical services. The study design compared ICBTE with MTE and MDS combined. This subset analysis distinguishes between the two clas…

Superior pedicle retroauricular island flap for ear and temporal region reconstruction: anatomic investigation and 52 cases series.

2008

Superior pedicle retroauricular island flap for ear and temporal region reconstruction: anatomic investigation and 52 cases series. Cordova A, Pirrello R, D'Arpa S, Moschella F. Source Cattedra di Chirurgia Plastica e Ricostruttiva, Dipartimento di Discipline Chirurgiche ed Oncologiche, Università degli Studi di Palermo, Palermo, Italy. adriana.cordova@excite.com Abstract BACKGROUND: On the basis of a previously published anatomic study on the superior auricular artery (SAA) and on a series of 52 consecutive cases, the authors propose a new superior pedicle retroauricular island flap (SP-RIF) for defects of the upper half of the ear and for temporal region or superficial helical defects. Diagonal ear lobe crease and atherosclerosis : a review of the medical literature and dental implications

2011

In Spain a significant number of individuals die from atherosclerotic disease of the coronary and carotid arteries without having classic risk factors and prodromal symptoms. The diagonal ear lobe crease (DELC) has been characterized in the medical literature as a surrogate marker which can identify high risk patients having occult atherosclerosis. This topic however has not been examined in either the medical or dental literature emanating from Spain. The majority of clinical, angiography and postmortem reports support the premise that DELC is a valuable extravascular physical sign able to distinguish some patients at risk of succumbing to atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. A minori…
