DNA Extraction From Orthoptera Museum Specimens

We describe a procedure for rapid purification of high quality DNA from either fresh or dry Orthoptera, suitable for the PCR amplification of DNA regions more than 800 bp long (even from oldest specimens), which allows genetic analyses on animals from collections without the complete specimen disruption.

Organics in soda-anthraquinone black liquors from hot-water-extracted non-wood feedstocks

The chemical compositions of black liquors (BLs) obtained from the soda-anthraquinone (AQ) pulping of untreated and hot-water-extracted non-wood feedstocks (okra stalk, miscanthus stalk, and wheat straw) were determined. These under-utilized renewable and widely available feedstocks could provide a cheaper source for producing fiber and precursors for manufacturing green chemicals. These BLs were mainly characterized in terms of carbohydrate-derived volatile carboxylic acids (acetic and formic acids) and non-volatile carboxylic acids (hydroxy acids) as well as lignin. Identification of metalloporphyrins extracted from the copper bearing black shale of fore sudetic monocline (Poland)

Abstract Metalloporphyrins were isolated from copper-bearing black shale ores. The shale originates from the Lubin copper mine (Poland). The porphyrins have been extracted by way of a Soxhlet apparatus, and then purified using column chromatography. In order to identify the extracted porphyrins complexes UV–Vis, mass spectrometry and EPR analytical techniques have been used.

Detection and isolation of single and mixed faults in a gearbox are very important to enhance the system reliability, lifetime, and service availability. This paper proposes a hybrid learning algorithm, consisting of multilayer perceptron (MLP)- and convolutional neural network (CNN)-based classifiers, for diagnosis of gearbox mixed faults. We propose in this paper a novel objective method to evaluate the perceived visual quality of 3D meshes. The proposed method in no-reference, it relies only on the distorted mesh for the quality estimation. It is based on a pre-trained convolutional neural network (i.e VGG to extract features from the distorted mesh) and handcrafted features extracted directly from the 3D mesh (i.e curvature and dihedral angle).
