Steroid-resistant eosinophilic fasciitis successfully treated with addition of extracorporeal photopheresis.

Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) is an uncommon fibrosing disease of the fascia with characteristic cutaneous and hematologic manifestations. Although EF is most commonly treated with corticosteroids at the beginning, a considerable number of patients show an inadequate response and hence various therapeutic strategies have been tried, including extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP). We describe the case of a 66-year-old woman with steroid-resistant EF that improved significantly after ECP was added to her treatment regimen. To date, only six cases of this therapeutic strategy have been reported in English literature.

Effectiveness of low-energy extracorporal shock waves for chronic plantar fasciitis

Summary Over a period of 4 years we performed a prospective randomized trial on 100 patients in order to compare the effects of low-energy extracorporal shock-wave therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of painful heel (chronic plantar fasciitis). Patients in group I were treated three times at weekly intervals with 1000 impulses of 0.08 mJ/mm 2 given around the heel spur. Group II received treatment three times with 10 impulses of the same energy density at weekly intervals. Follow-up examinations were done at 12 and 52 weeks, respectively. Pheromones presumably secreted by mating conspecifics – as well as homogenates containing tissue that is homologous with the atrial gland – increase the time that Aplysia fasciata spend feeding. This effect is caused by increasing the number of feeding episodes initiated in response to food, whereas the duration of a feeding bout remains unchanged. These effects can be mimicked by administering homogenate of the large hermaphroditic duct containing atrial gland tissue, as well as peptides from the bag cells. Aim The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS® ) Society guidelines aim to standardise perioperative care in colorectal surgery via 25 principles. We aimed to assess the variation in uptake of these principles across an international network of colorectal units. This experiment tested the hypothesis that running-induced damage to rat skeletal muscle causes changes in synthesis and degradation of basement membrane type IV collagen and to proteins regulating its degradation. Samples from soleus muscle and red and white parts of quadriceps femoris muscle (MQF) were collected 6 h or 1, 2, 4, or 7 days after downhill running.
