Impact of Myocardial Fibrosis on Left Ventricular Function Evaluated by Feature-Tracking Myocardial Strain Cardiac Magnetic Resonance in Competitive …
2019
BACKGROUND To analyze the effect of myocardial fibrosis on left ventricular (LV) function evaluated by feature-tracking strain analysis by cine cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in competitive male triathletes with normal ejection fraction (EF).Methods and Results:78 asymptomatic male triathletes with >10 weekly training hours (43±11 years) and 28 male age-matched controls were studied by late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) and cine CMR. Global and segmental radial, longitudinal and circumferential strains were analyzed using feature-tracking cine CMR. Focal non-ischemic LGE was observed in 15 of 78 triathletes (19%, LGE+) with predominance in the basal inferolateral segments. LVEF was normal …
Body Mass Index and Liver Stiffness Affect Accuracy of Ultrasonography in Detecting Steatosis in Patients With Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 1 I…
2013
Background & Aims: Few studies have evaluated the accuracy of ultrasonography in detecting steatosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C. We assessed its accuracy in detecting steatosis and factors that affect its diagnostic performance in consecutive patients with chronic hepatitis C virus genotype 1infection. Methods: We analyzed data from 515 patients with chronic hepatitis C, confirmed by liver biopsy, assessing anthropometric, biochemical, metabolic, virologic, and ultrasonography features. Transient elastography was performed to measure liver stiffness. Steatosis was identified with ultrasonography based on detection of a bright liver echo pattern. Results: Ultrasonography identified…
The Prevalence of NAFLD and Fibrosis in Bariatric Surgery Patients and the Reliability of Noninvasive Diagnostic Methods
2020
Background. Bariatric surgery patients have a higher prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) than the general population; however, its assessment and the accurate staging of fibrosis are often complicated because noninvasive tests are not very accurate in patients with morbid obesity, and liver biopsy cannot be performed as a routine exam. The aim of this study was to evaluate (A) the histological prevalence of NAFL, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and fibrosis in patients undergoing bariatric surgery; (B) the reliability of ultrasound (US) in diagnosing NAFL; and (C) the reliability of various fibrosis scoring systems for defining fibrosis. Methods. US and intraoperative liver b…

Non-classic cystic fibrosis associated with D1152H CFTR mutation. Background: Limited knowledge exists on phenotypes associated with the D1152H cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) mutation. Methods: Subjects with a D1152H allele in trans with another CFTR mutation were identified using the French Cystic Fibrosis Registry. Phenotypic characteristics were compared with those of pancreatic insufficient (PI) and pancreatic sufficient (PS) cystic fibrosis (CF)…
Differences of airway dimensions between patients with and without bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome after lung transplantation-Computer-assisted qua…
2016
Abstract Background The aim of our retrospective study was to determine whether a dedicated software for assessment of airway morphology can detect differences in airway dimensions between patients with and without bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), regarded as the clinical correlate of chronic lung allograft rejection. Methods 12 patients with and 14 patients without diagnosis of BOS were enrolled in the study. Evaluation of bronchial wall area percentage (WA%) and bronchial wall thickness (WT) in all follow-up CT scans was performed using a semiautomatic airway assessment tool. We assessed temporal changes (ΔWA%, ΔWT) and compared these morphological parameters with forced expirator…
Peginterferon alfa-2b plus ribavirin for naïve patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C: a randomized controlled trial
2004
We assessed the effectiveness and safety of an induction dose of peginterferon alfa-2b (PEG-IFN) plus ribavirin for initial treatment of patients with genotype 1 chronic HCV infection in a randomized, controlled, multicenter trial.Three hundred and eleven naïve patients infected with genotype 1 and chronic hepatitis were randomly assigned to 48-week treatment with PEG-IFN once weekly (80-100 micrograms depending on body weight for 8 weeks, followed by 50 micrograms for the next 40 weeks), or standard interferon alfa-2b (IFN) 6 million units on alternate days, both in combination with ribavirin (1000-1200 mg/day).PEG-IFN plus ribavirin significantly increased sustained virological response (…
Genetic, andrological and clinical characteristics of patients with congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens
2001
Summary The possibility of retrieving spermatozoa from the epididymis allows patients with congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) to father a child by means of assisted reproduction techniques. This has, however, increased the chance of transmitting a mutated allele of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene which increases the risk of generating offspring with cystic fibrosis (CF). Because of the increased heterogeneity of the CFTR locus, the study of a discrete number of mutations, as usually carried out in a diagnostic work-up, is unable to ascertain the presence of a mutation in a relatively high proportion of the patients screened. In an at…
Different patterns of myocardial iron distribution by whole-heart T2* magnetic resonance as risk markers for heart complications in thalassemia major.
2014
Background The multislice multiecho T2* cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) technique allows to detect different patterns of myocardial iron overload (MIO). The aim of this cross-sectional study was to verify the association between cardiac complications (heart failure and arrhythmias), biventricular dysfunction and myocardial fibrosis with different patterns of MIO in thalassemia major (TM) patients. Methods We considered 812 TM patients enrolled in the Myocardial Iron Overload in Thalassemia (MIOT) Network. The T2* value in all the 16 cardiac segments was evaluated. Results We identified 4 groups of patients: 138 with homogeneous MIO (all segments with T2* < 20 ms), 97 with heterogene…
Myocardial scarring by delayed enhancement cardiovascular magnetic resonance in thalassaemia major
2009
Background: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) by delayed enhancement (DE) enables visualisation of myocardial scarring, but no dedicated studies are available in thalassaemia major. Objective: To investigate the prevalence, extent, clinical and instrumental correlates of myocardial fibrosis or necrosis by DE CMR in patients with thalassaemia major. Patients: 115 Patients with thalassaemia major consecutively examined at an MRI laboratory. Methods: DE images were acquired to quantify myocardial scarring. Myocardial iron overload was determined by multislice multiecho T2*. Cine images were obtained to evaluate biventricular function. Results: DE areas were present in 28/115 patients (24…
Automatic detection and quantification of ground-glass opacities on high-resolution CT using multiple neural networks: comparison with a density mask.
2000
We compared multiple neural networks with a density mask for the automatic detection and quantification of ground-glass opacities on high-resolution CT under clinical conditions.Eighty-four patients (54 men and 30 women; age range, 18-82 years; mean age, 49 years) with a total of 99 consecutive high-resolution CT scans were enrolled in the study. The neural network was designed to detect ground-glass opacities with high sensitivity and to omit air-tissue interfaces to increase specificity. The results of the neural network were compared with those of a density mask (thresholds, -750/-300 H), with a radiologist serving as the gold standard. The neural network classified 6% of the total lung a…
