Treatment of distal intraarticular tibial fractures: A biomechanical evaluation of intramedullary nailing vs. angle-stable plate osteosynthesis

2015

In factures of the distal tibia with simple articular extension, the optimal surgical treatment remains debatable. In clinical practice, minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis and intramedullary nailing are both routinely performed. Comparative biomechanical studies of different types of osteosynthesis of intraarticular distal tibial fractures are missing due to the lack of an established model. The goal of this study was first to establish a biomechanical model and second to investigate, which are the biomechanical advantages of angle-stable plate osteosynthesis and intramedullary nailing of distal intraarticular tibial fractures. Seven 4(th) generation biomechanical composite tibiae feat…

Kinematics of the patellofemoral joint. Investigations on a computer model with reference to patellar fractures.

1990

Patellofemoral kinematics were studied on a computer model. The articulating point of the patella moves from distal to proximal during flexion, until the quadriceps tendon starts to turn around the femur tendo-femoral gliding. The pattern of patellofemoral movement consists of a gliding and rolling component, the latter at its maximum at the beginning of flexion. The pathway of the instant centers of motion moves from dorsal to ventral during flexion. Stress analysis shows that the contact area is at all times the area of maximum bending stress. The distal part of the patella is the part with mechanical stress at all angles of flexion. The conclusions to be drawn for treatment are that frac…

Differences in Accuracy and Radiation Dose in Placement of Iliosacral Screws: Comparison between 3D and 2D Fluoroscopy

2022

Percutaneous iliosacral screw fixation is a widely accepted method of stabilizing the posterior pelvic ring. Recently developed tools such as 3D-navigated fluoroscopy and computed navigation seem to prevent a surgeon from conducting screw misplacement. The study aimed to comparatively assess the introduction of sacroiliac screw placement using 2D and 3D fluoroscopy in terms of accuracy and radiation exposure. Iliosacral screws were introduced in 37 patients using 2D (group N1) and in 36 patients using 3D fluoroscopy (group N2) techniques. Overall, 61 and 56 screws were introduced in groups N1 and N2, respectively. Screw placement accuracy was assessed using postoperative computed tomography…

Microsurgery and external fixation in orthoplastic reconstruction of tibial injuries.

2019

"Orthoplastics" is a relatively new approach to lower limb reconstruction, where an integration of both plastic and orthopedic expertise is required, together with the availability of well-equipped facilities. Acute shortening and long-term frames for lengthening are generally considered alternatives to length preservation and soft tissue microsurgical reconstruction, but an integration of external fixation and reconstructive microsurgery is gaining an increasing role with refinements of joint approaches.Data on sixteen patients who underwent microsurgical lower limb reconstruction and external fixation with an orthoplastic approach, following acute or chronic tibial injury, were retrospect…

You Can Even Walk Alone. Stadium Attendance and Professional Soccer Clubs’ Social Role

2008

The purpose of the paper is to suggest a new perspective on the social role in the community for Italian professional soccer clubs. Our findings loosen the knot between hooligans and clubs and could have important consequences on the club’s corporate social responsibility and marketing strategies. After investigating the impact of stadium attendance on team performance for Serie A and B in seasons 2004/05 through 2006/07, we conclude that crowd plays no role in the winning performance of soccer teams at home. Our proposal consists of two policies hinting at a reconciliation between social and educational role of the sport with the club’s commercial interests. The first policy is to establis…

The existence of solutions for the modified (p(x), q(x))-Kirchhoff equation

2022

We consider the Dirichlet problem-Delta(Kp)(p(x))u(x) - Delta(Kq)(q(x))u(x) = f(x, u(x), del u(x)) in Omega, u vertical bar(partial derivative Omega) = 0,driven by the sum of a p(x)-Laplacian operator and of a q(x)-Laplacian operator, both of them weighted by indefinite (sign-changing) Kirchhoff type terms. We establish the existence of weak solution and strong generalized solution, using topological tools (properties of Galerkin basis and of Nemitsky map). In the particular case of a positive Kirchhoff term, we obtain the existence of weak solution (= strong generalized solution), using the properties of pseudomonotone operators.

LA TUTELA DEI CONTRATTI A TERMINE ILLEGITTIMI CON LA P.A.: SUL RISARCIMENTO DEL DANNO RESTA APERTO IL TORNEO TRA I TRIBUNALI DI MERITO.

2013

Radiographic Assessment of Tibiofibular Syndesmosis Injury with Different Durations and Types of Fixation

2022

Introduction: There is no consensus among orthopedic surgeons on the number of cortical layers (tricortical or quadricortical fixation) involved or the duration of syndesmotic fixation after a tibiofibular syndesmosis (TFSD)-injury treatment. The purpose of this study was to assess radiographic parameters following the treatment of TFSD injuries, with various time-windows of syndesmotic screw removal and numbers of cortical layers involved. Materials and Methods: Fifty-five patients, aged from 25 to 75 years, were included in the study. The follow-up period ranged from 2 years to 4 years and 2 months. The patients were subdivided into groups based on the duration of the syndesmotic fixation…

First observation and study of the K± → π±π0e+e− decay

2018

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K-+/- -> pi(+/-)pi(0)e(+)e(-) decay from an exposure of 1.7 x 10(11) charged kaon decays recorded in 2003-2004. A sample of 4919 candidates with 4.9% background contamination allows the determination of the branching ratio in the full kinematic region, BR(K-+/- -> pi(+/-)pi(0)e(+)e(-)) = (4.24 +/- 0.14) x 10(-6). The study of the kinematic space shows evidence for a structure dependent contribution in agreement with predictions based on chiral perturbation theory. Several P- and CP-violating asymmetries are also evaluated.

Jet fragmentation transverse momentum distributions in pp and p-Pb collisions at √s, √sNN = 5.02 TeV

2021

Jet fragmentation transverse momentum (jT) distributions are measured in proton-proton (pp) and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. Jets are reconstructed with the ALICE tracking detectors and electromagnetic calorimeter using the anti-kT algorithm with resolution parameter R = 0.4 in the pseudorapidity range |η| < 0.25. The jT values are calculated for charged particles inside a fixed cone with a radius R = 0.4 around the reconstructed jet axis. The measured jT distributions are compared with a variety of parton-shower models. Herwig and Pythia 8 based models describe the data well for the higher jT region, while they underestimate the low…

related to the perturbative component of the fragmentation processthe measured trends are successfully described by all models except for Herwig. For the wide componentHerwig and PYTHIA 8 based models slightly underestimate the data for the higher jet transverse momentum region. These measurements set constraints on models of jet fragmentation and hadronisation.Nuclear and High Energy Physicswhile that of the inverse gamma function increases with increasing jet transverse momentum. For the narrow componentHeavy Ion Experimentsand with a Gaussian for lower jT values (called the “narrow component”)hiukkasfysiikkawhile they underestimate the lower jT region. The jT distributions are further characterised by fitting them with a function composed of an inverse gamma function for higher jT values (called the “wide component”)predominantly connected to the hadronisation process.
