Examining the relationship between public speaking anxiety, distress tolerance and psychological flexibility

2020

Public speaking is an important skill for university students to learn and practice as they progress through education and into their careers. However, individuals often avoid facing public speaking, as they lack the skills to cope with the anxiety that arises when speaking in front of others. The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between public speaking anxiety, distress tolerance, and psychological flexibility. A sample of 95 college students completed psychological flexibility measures and self-ratings of public speaking anxiety before and after a public speaking challenge. A behavioral index of public speaking distress tolerance (i.e., speech duration) was also recorde…

A psychological flexibility -based intervention for burnout : A randomized controlled trial

2020

A novel eight-week program based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) principles was created to alleviate burnout-related ill-being and to enhance well-being. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of the program and explored whether changes in psychological flexibility mediated the results of the intervention. The program consisted of structured weekly face-to-face group meetings and daily practices provided via a website. Employees from varying professional backgrounds with burnout (mean age = 47 years, 79% female), who all received usual treatment, 1 were randomized into control (TAU, n = 80, receiving no other support) and ACT + TAU intervention (n = 88, r…

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Health Behavior Change: A Contextually-Driven Approach.

2018

Promoting health behavior change presents an important challenge to theory and research in the field of health psychology. In this paper, we introduce a context-driven approach, the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model which is built on Relational Frame Theory. The ACT-based intervention aims to promote individuals’ new health behavior patterns through the improvement of the key construct of psychological flexibility, which is defined as the ability to contact the present moment more fully with acceptance and mindfulness as a conscious human being. Building on the psychological flexibility model, implemented through the six core ACT processes, individuals improve maintenance of lon…

Response to reindeer grazing removal depends on soil characteristics in low Arctic meadows

2014

In Arctic tundra, grazing is expected to exert a positive influence on microbial activity thus enhancing nutrient cycling and promoting the presence of high productive graminoids. We investigated the changes occurring in two low Arctic meadow sites after 10 years exclusion from grazing. We compared plant, soil fauna and microbial community composition, extracellular enzymes activities, and soil nutrients in ungrazed and adjacent grazed area in two low Arctic meadows. The two closely located experimental sites were both dominated by the common grass Deschampsia flexuosa which covered more than 50% of the meadows. Plant community was affected significantly by site and grazing, but the effect …

Liquidación de la sociedad de gananciales: el caso de la adjudicación forzosa de participaciones sociales de carácter ganancial a un solo cónyuge. Co…

2021

In a liquidation of community property, the rules for the partition of the inheritance are of suppletive application. Therefore, the sentence opts for a criterion of flexible interpretation of those rules, whose application will be subject to the objective entity of the property in question. Accordingly, when the only property to be shared between the spouses is constituted by set of shares of common nature, taking into account the special circumstances of the case, such shares could be awarded to one of the spouses with the obligation to compensate the other in money, even if it requests the sale of the shares in the public auction. To this end, the request would have to impede the possibi…

Flexibility in otherwise consistent non-breeding movements of a long-distance migratory seabird, the long-tailed skua

2017

Quantifying within- and between-individual variation in animal migration strategies is a first step towards our understanding of the ability of migrants to adjust to changes in the en - vironment. We studied consistency (or, conversely, flexibility) in movement patterns at large (>1000 km) to meso-scales (100−1000 km) during the non-breeding season of the long-tailed skua Stercorarius longicaudus, a long-distance migratory Arctic seabird, using light-based geolocation. We obtained 97 annual tracks of 38 individuals and quantified similarity between routes. Overall, tracks of the same individual were generally within about 200 to 300 km of their previous year’s route, and more similar than t…

Cognitive variability in bipolar I disorder: A cluster-analytic approach informed by resting-state data

2019

Abstract Background While the presence of cognitive performance deficits in bipolar disorder I (BD-I) is well established, there is no consensus about which cognitive abilities are affected. Heterogeneous phenotypes displayed in BD-I further suggest the existence of subgroups among the disorder. The present study sought to identify different cognitive profiles among BD-I patients as well as potentially underlying neuronal network changes. Methods 54 euthymic BD-I patients underwent cognitive testing and resting state neuroimaging. Hierarchical cluster-analysis was performed on executive function scores of bipolar patients. The derived clusters were compared against 54 age-, gender- and IQ-m…

The relative contribution to the plantar-flexor torque of the soleus motor units activated by the H reflex and M response in humans.

2000

Abstract This study proposes a method of quantifying the relative contribution to the plantar-flexor torque of soleus H and M responses evoked by tibial nerve stimulation. For ten subjects, the amplitude of the twitch produced by the H wave was plotted against the corresponding potential, for stimuli producing H without M (i.e. in the ascending portion of the H-recruitment curve). It was then assumed that the contribution of H to twitches produced by M plus H was similar for similar H waves on the curve-descending portion. Hence, the contribution of M was estimated, for the range of M waves including those accompanying H max . The estimated mechanical contributions of H and M wave increase …
