Skeletal muscle blood flow and flow heterogeneity during dynamic and isometric exercise in humans

The effects of dynamic and intermittent isometric knee extension exercises on skeletal muscle blood flow and flow heterogeneity were studied in seven healthy endurance-trained men. Regional muscle blood flow was measured using positron emission tomography (PET) and an [15O]H2O tracer, and electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded in the quadriceps femoris (QF) muscle during submaximal intermittent isometric and dynamic exercises. QF blood flow was 61% ( P = 0.002) higher during dynamic exercise. Interestingly, flow heterogeneity was 13% ( P = 0.024) lower during dynamic compared with intermittent isometric exercise. CT-guided stereotactic biopsy aided by Doppler ultrasonic vascular monitoring

The use of a 20 MHz pulsed Doppler technique during stereotactic brain tumour biopsies is described. By means of a miniaturized ultrasonic probe the tissue planned for biopsy was investigated for vessel signals. Out of 41 patients, with this technique a flow-pulse curve in front of the biopsy cannula was registered in 14 cases. In 9 cases one pulse curve was determined and in 5 cases two or more flow curves were found, indicating the presence of arterial vessels. The depth of the vessels signal could be localized and this area avoided for biopsy sampling. In a series of 41 stereotactic biopsies carried out in this way there was no intra-operative haemorrhage or postoperative haematoma.

Sustained sympathetic activation not only leads to vasoconstriction but also might induce paradox vasodilation. This study was performed to explore whether and how alpha(2)-receptor stimulation mediates this vasodilation. We investigated 11 healthy subjects in 33 dermal microdialysis (MD) sessions. After nerve trunk blockade, MD fibers were inserted and perfused with physiological saline until skin trauma-related vasodilation subsided. In order to investigate whether hypertension-related structural vascular changes may be influenced by antihypertensive treatment, 10 patients were studied suffering from essential arterial hypertension, five males and five females, aged between 34 and 61 years (mean age: 46.9 +/- 8.13 years). All patients received a placebo for 1 week and then captopril, 75 mg b.i.d. for 3 months. The aim of this prospective cross-sectional study was to establish new Doppler reference curves for peak blood flow velocities (Vmax, Vmean, Vmin) and impedance indices (PI, RI) of the middle cerebral artery at 18-42 weeks of gestation by an automatic wave form analysis integrated into the ultrasound device. We describe the use of an Amplatzer Vascular Plug (AVP) II for embolizing a large high-flow splenic arteriovenous fistula and an aneurysm in a young patient. This patient presented to our center with persistent mild abdominal discomfort, 5 years after open splenectomy. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography angiography showed the presence of a fistula between the splenic arterial and splenic venous remnants and a resultant fusiform aneurysmal dilatation of the residual splenic vein. We decide to embolize the splenic artery with a 12-mm diameter AVP II with an oversizing by 70% of the vessel diameter.
